im going Jan 2017 for a trip to Disney&universal and I'm worrying myself to death. I have Disney figured out but for IOA and universal I'd love to take my dslr however I know on the larger coasters you can't have a bag. What rides are a def no no and the other rides throughout both parks can I bring the bag on board with me?

We never had a problem with smaller bags. I know Six Flags now makes you put nearly everything in a locker or keep items with a non-rider, then turn around and charge you $3 for 2-hours of locker time.

But think carefully about what you really need to bring. If you can do without something for that day, leave it in your room or the car. I only brink my car keys, wallet and phone anymore, maybe a small umbrella if I think it will rain. You will get through security a lot faster without a bag as well.

I agree I didn't earlier this year and was so nice however was still a pain for dragon challenge and others since you have to empty everything due to metal detectors and the employees are not friendly about it at all even though it was first time going since them being installed. Just thought I'd ask around because figured be nice to have my dslr for pictures.

Why don't you leave the camera in the lockers at the rides? They're free, and meant for that purpose, any valuables or loose pocket items should go in there. Hulk, Dragon, Forbidden Journey, Mummy and Rip-Ride all have free lockers IIRC.

Thanks everyone for answering! I know they have free lockers just trying to determine if even worth taking like a drawstring bag in with my dslr or is it going to be more of a hassle than anything. Meaning is even worth taking in or should I just take pictures from my phone and be done with it?

Depends on how much you enjoy taking photos to be honest. I've gone to Universal with and without a camera and regardless would end up using lockers for other things. In general the lockers aren't too difficult to deal with just a bit of a pain if they are really crowded... Real trick is to make sure you hit the locker before you get in line sometime people miss the lockers only to have to leave the line when they realize the locker isn't on the way, Men in Black is one of those where the lockers aren't necessarily convenient depending on which direction you are coming from.

Also if you do the wet rides you'll want to use a locker but they aren't provided for free, so if you have anything you don't want wet and don't want to pay for a locker you'll need to have a waterproof plastic bag to put your stuff in.

How many days are you spending at Universal? If it's just one, I wouldn't worry about taking DSLR photos as you're going to be a little pressed for time to see both parks.

On some rides you have to put your phone in a locker, so why not take the bag. It's really not that much of a hassel (with the exception of Dragon Challenge)

Yep. Universal has the most draconian bag/item policy of any theme park chain I've been too. They make you empty your pockets before numerous rides and even deploy metal detectors and security to look for bulges in your clothing. Even if you don't bring a large camera, I'd recommend using a pack or drawstring bag rather than having to constantly empty and refill your pockets in the crowded locker alcoves.
