Hey every one I had a question some one might be able to answer. Every year I go and ride this ride ( living with the land) and they always have baby alligators. My question is what do they do with them when they get big? I have never seen the same set more than 2 times so thats over 300 alligators. Where do they go?

Take the "Behind the seeds" tour. It tells you that when they reach market size they go to the market.

They retire them to River Country where they feed on snooping guests:)

I'm such a hypocrite. Not horrified that we eat cows/chickens/pigs....yet totally horrified these gators are used for meat. *hangs head*

This is going to sound awful but I think it's because the baby gators are so cute. All baby animals are. We just don't get the image or an adorable baby chick when sitting down for a chicken parm hero. My nephew recently pet a baby cow (I suppose that's a calf) at a farm and found it so ridiculously cute he became a vegetarian. Me - I'm on my way over to the awesome Italian restaurant near my office for a chicken roll. Circle of life.

I had the same reaction. I never ate veal because I felt too badly for the baby cows (calves, I know)...but I was fine with cheeseburgers, lol.

I watched a show about eggs (seriously, an entire hour on eggs, this is the kind of dumb thing I watch) and they showed how they separate girl baby chicks from boy baby chicks (fascinating). Then they said all those adorable baby boy chicks were killed and I briefly considered giving up eggs completely, lol.

Being high up on the food chain comes with some pangs of guilt, doesn't it?

Poor baby chicks. Poor little gators.

But eggs are good! :)

HAHA My friends uncle owns a ranch, they recently butchered a cow on property for the meat and ALLLLL 3 of the girls there are now vegetarians. ROFL.

And yessss, these sweet babies! I watched a show where these turtles lay their eggs on land, the babies hatch and have to some how make it to the ocean! Well more than 50% of these ADORABLE baby turtles get eaten by birds, crabs and various other animals. Im screaming at my TV, going ??? LEAVE THEM ALOOOONE. Not even considering this would mean whatever animal ate them, would be missing an entire meal! haha.

The circle of life is a *B*. LOL

Whatever you do, don't watch Disney's flamingo movie, "The Crimson Wing." I NEVER cry during movies...but the tears were just running down my face during that, lol.

While they are used for meat and hides now, there was a time when they were also used to rebuild the wild gator poulation.

Kind of like sea turtles in the Caymans. Sea Turtles are endangered, but you are allowed to eat them in the Caymans (it's really not anything special by the way - like fishy chicken). They have a farm on Grand Cayman that raises the turtles. Half go to food, the other half go to the wild. Because of a ready source of food turtles and the restocking of wild populations, sea turtles are now on the rebound.

Had Alligator Jambalaya when I was in New Orleans. Not bad really.

Now, it would be really cool if they offered alligator flambe at Garden Grill....after all the tour says that the food grown in the greenhouse, etc is used in the restaurant (although my behind the scenes (not Behind the Seeds) tour guide told us that was a lie and that the tomatos, cukes etc from the greenhouse were offered to employees, but that's topic for another thread). Can you imagine being able to come in and select your own alligator like you do for lobster in some restaurants? Mmmmmmm.....tasty!
