does anyone know of any free software that i can download that will play .avi files?
windows media player just plays the sound on them for some reason:veryconfu

Sounds to me like you have a codec problem
get DivX
www.divx.com that should fix it

Also make sure you have the latest Media PLayer from
http://www.windows.com/mediaplayer - that will ensure you have all the officially supported codecs (just incase it isnt DIVX that you are missing).
