If I remember right, I had to decrease the resolution of the pic to make it fit under 20000. Either that I had to make the pic a little bit smaller.

There are several ways to make the pic smaller in disk space.

If the picture is a GIF file, then you either have to change the pictures palette to a simpler one or try to reduce the high frequency changes in the image. So as not to get too technical, let's save your avatar as a JPEG :)

Ok, jpeg files use a variation of a discrete cosine transform and some other algorithms to compress an image .. what this means to you is that the image is compressed by selectivly REMOVING parts of the original image and approximating those missing parts when the image is displayed again. To a user trying to make the picture size in bytes smaller, a "Quality factor" is used. This is a number representing how much of the original image you are willing to sacrifice for a smaller file.

So, in short, save your avatar as a JPEG (jpg) and choose a quality factor that is not as "Good" as you were using before.

In photoshop, try a quality factor of "5".

This isn't too technical?

Trying to explain why a gif doesn't always compress better than a JPEG for certain image types and how to make a gif smaller would have been even MORE technical.

heh plus I didn't want to just say "reduce the quality of the jpeg" without giving an explanation of why it works ;)
