I think (but I am not positive) that it varies by bank?

It will vary by bank and ATM.

I know I recently had to update all of my spending limits with my bank. Including ATM withdrawal limits, debit card limits, and credit purchase limits. With all of the new changes and addition of computer chipped cards I know most banks are updating their information to help provide better fraud protection.

I'd also advise you to let your bank know that you will be traveling and to put you on their "travel list" while you're asking about their withdrawal maximums. Some banks have very strict fraud protections and a couple of out of town charges can trigger your debit card to be shut down until they can contact you. If you're on the "travel list" that should be prevented.
