Atlantis Live Action Remake

Any lackluster animated property that Disney wants to make into a live action movie in an effort to revitalize it is A-OK in my book. I thought they were also going to do The Black Cauldron (for the same reason) but haven't heard much about it. This one has more going for it though; I can see why it is in early development. And possibly PG-13 no less. Interesting!

It's guaranteed to be an upgrade from the original, regardless of how well it's made.

No joke. It could be an all-fish cast with Bill Cosby doing the voices and it would still be far more tolerable than the animated version of this.

Hmm I was never interested in the animated movie. Was it even popular? Nobody ever references it. With the popular animated movies being turned into live action remakes there's a built-in draw.

Well with this one it helps that people know of or know about the mythical city of Atlantis. The subject is well known even if the animated movie is not. (In comparison to other Disney movies)

Wow, had no idea this film was reviled. I enjoyed it. Gorgeous style. Great characters. Cool set-pieces. As a whole it did try to do too many things, and I felt it should have either been longer or honed down.

Ditto. Seemed fine to me. Not amazing but still memorable and enjoyable. It's been a while but I don't remember it having any big musical numbers or any emotional draw that most Disney movies favor. The big baddy was also predictable but the 180 turn of the entire crew was a bit jarring and somewhat out of character, if memory serves. I didn't like that. It could have been better. Not bad, but not great. I can see why they'd want to revisit the property to course-correct and find a new audience.

At least they're remaking a bad movie for a change...

Although I think it's a GOOD film, wonder if Disney will ever remake Treasure Planet?

I too thought Treasure Planet received a much harsher reception than it deserved. By no means perfect, but it did a faithful job of retelling the Stevenson classic, while taking risks with the sci-fi / outer space elements added.

While Jim Hawkins and some of the main leads seemed cardboard and forgettable, I thought Long John Silver was done very well, both in design and vocal performance. Definitely an underrated Disney villain with a lot of depth to his character.

With all of its faults considered, this adaption still gets an "A" for effort in my book. It was definitely no Atlantis for me, where I stopped caring about all the characters involved before the halfway mark.
