My best recordings have come from using a decent quality directional mike with my camcorder. Unfortunately, it's also the most expensive way to record things because you need to use a camcorder battery and a video tape just to record music.

Most of my recordings were with a simple portable cassette recorder, and the quality wasn't great. The recordings left a lot to be desired, and they were tinny and had a low range. Since the recorder was cheap, I got what I paid for.

These days, you can probably use a good mp3 player to get the job done (although your results will definately vary).

If you really want to make this count, I'd experiment a little bit at home before you leave. Make sure you have a good setup before you spend the time while you're on vacation.

I used to use a mini disc recorder, now I use a iriver IFP-899 mp3 player with an external mic, it can store 1gb and is great quality.

thanks for your input guys...
I think that an mp3 player will be the way to go
what players do we need to look for one that has the
line in recording ability?

And what would you recommend for a mic for recording?

I have a small digital voice recorder.

You can record audio with an iPod if you buy a seperate mic. If you go to the Apple store online or iLounge.com you can find it.
