Has anyone had success with a room upgrade at AOA? We booked a mermaid room, and I know our 4 will be a little cramped. What's the possibility of upgrading to a suite? Are there ever any deals they can offer? Perhaps some special 'magic' when we check in? Any tips or suggestions? Trip is next week. Thanks!

The possibility of upgrading increases with your willingness to pay for the upgrade. There won't be any special deal, just the difference in room cost. If you ask for a free upgrade you will be almost guaranteed not to get one.

"Magic" upgrades do happen but they are rare and unexpected (otherwise they wouldn't be magic ;).)

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
If you want a suite I would book the suite. If not then most likely no you will not get one. They "magically" happen on occasion but it's not the norm. Disney is not like outside hotel chains that welcome guests asking for upgrades and often do upgrade if you are members of their rewards programs etc. Plus Disney occupancy is often much higher than non Disney hotels so harder to ever upgrade people even if they wanted to. ;)

Something that has worked for us, 5 out of 6 trips so far.

Before we go in to the hotel to check in we pull up the website and see what types or rooms are available if we wanted to book today or tomorrow, it will show what type of rooms are available up to that moment, we have asked to be upgraded to one of those types of rooms and we have had some success, it cant hurt to try it, I picked this up from purchasing second hand tickets to sports events, I have had quite a bit of success(luck) whatever you want to call it. Hope it works, let me know

Book a family suite if that's what you want. Why would you book a standard room then hope for an "upgrade"? Additionally, the mermaid rooms are very limited and are never eligible for WDW promotions. I'm amazed how many people on here are only willing to pay for standard rooms or value resorts and them expect WDW to "upgrade" them to a suite, deluxe resort or even club level. C'mon people.
