Are we nuts for even thinking about going during New Years weekend.

[font=verdana, arial, helvetica]Are we nuts for even thinking about going to WDW DEC 30-Jan 5. I am sure that it is crowded and the weather probably isn't the greatest, but it's something about New Years at WDW that's tempting. This would mean that we could go for 7 days/6 nights and only have to use 3 days of vacation to do it. Going earlier isn't an option since the rest of December is already spoken for at work. We really don't want to do it anytime sooner since we are going to be at WDW over Labor Day weekend. If we did this, would getting an AP for our Sept trip be our best bet, since we would be staying 10 day/9 nights during the two trips combined.

What do you all think?

Well a couple of years ago we spend New Year's Eve at MGM. I am used to summer crowds and even Christmas crowds, and nothing compared to NYE. MGM was absolutely packed. But because we were able to use Fastpasses right, we were able to see everything at the park. The reason we were down there was because Tennessee and Michigan were playing in the Citrus Bowl the next day. And it was enjoyable talking to other Tennessee fans and such. Also the NYE fireworks were wonderful.

So I guess my advice would be if you are not too worried about huge crowds and you want to experience WDW on NYE, I would say go for it. It truely is a magical time. Much different from summer and Christmas. It's sort of like a party atmosphere (at least at MGM). But you should also hear opinions of others as well.

We went a few years ago right after New Year. The crowds were way low on Jan 2 - 9. I heard the New Year's celebrations are fun though. :king: I hope you have a great time! I don't think you are crazy - you will get the thrill of being there at a great time (New Year's) and still enjoy more because the crowds will decrease right away after the holiday! (Kids going back to school)

No it's phenomenal!!

Ill be there for our third year in a row.

The AP pass you speak of will help you with admission to the parks, but should not help you with securing resort room AP rates b/c codes are not out for check-ins during mid week. The last day for the past 2 years of AP rates was conveniently our first day of check, and also my 20th and then 21st birthday, on 12/26.

Youll ahve a super great time.

AND the weather the past two years has been high 70s and 80s, practicly perfect in every way. Except for that rain 2 years ago, about 3 hours before midnight. UGH.

:xmas:

Thanks. We plan on waiting to do anything until after we get back from our Labor Day weekend trip before we plan anything. I know that the AP wont helpo with rates at that time, but I am sure we will beable to get a AAA rate. We are realy thinking heavily about getting AP if we go both Sept and Dec.

You ask if you're crazy for going over the New Year's Holiday? I say yes, but I say it politely!

I was there this past New Year's Eve, and it was too crowded for me! I can take large crowds, but it honestly was miserable. I was at the Magic Kingdom and honestly, it took 45 minutes to walk from the castle stage area to Tomorrowland after the first Wishes show.

Disney had the back stage walkways open to go from the main entrance to other areas, but it honestly didn't help!

The one good thing about being there on New Year's Eve, the Fireworks! They were going up in 6 places all around the park! Best fireworks show I've ever seen! This was after Wishes!

Just thought I would share my thoughts. Sorry if I am the party pooper... just trying to help!

Have fun!

crazydaveh,

Thanks for being honest. We are trying to get as many peoples opionions as possible. No matter where you travel to for New Years, it is going to be very crowded.

It really depends on how much you can handle crowds and enjoy extra fireworks?

Now being a local, I have no desire to be at the parks during such a busy time. I can see fireworks almost any time I want, so I don't feel the need to "kill myself" with the crowds. Not to mention the traffic getting out of the park.

I am unable to enjoy something with that degree of "humanity" in the parks. :D

well, call me crazy as well. i want to go to disney for NYE because that is my birthday (well, the next day 01/01) but it is celebrated on the eve because i have found that everybody is always to hungover to do anything on the actual new years day. i have been fighting this my whole life (except when i was a child, it was hangovers from to much pizza and coca-cola watching ________ Clark  )

Um, yes :) Very, very crazy :lookaroun Having said that I have been to WDW the last eleven years over NYE  Every year I say I will not do it again.

Weather? I have been when it was 35 and when it was 75 on NYE :D Oh yea, the 2002 NYE rain. Um, monsoon was more like it. The Queen Mary had to take us back to our hotel. Well the water was not quite that deep, just two feet or so at the bus stops.

Crowds? The entire world, all six billion, will be at whatever park you choose on NYE  Get there early on NYE as they have closed the parks to additional guest early in the day the past few years. Don't try to park hop on NYE or you may have to hop back to your hotel

Room rates? Try high, no higher than that :( Last year I booked air etc for the 28th-4th. Then they came out with lower room rates for stays starting by the 26th

AP? Absolutely. Unless you go when they have a pay 5 and stay 7 or something like that, which they won't have in late Dec., the AP break even is at 7.5 days. With food or room discounts it can be far fewer days.
