Yes, they currently shoot tree-dwelling hippos.

Yes, they were brought back a year or so ago, however this time they are attached to a cord and the gun shot is played over the ride speakers.

The gunshot noise over the speaker is kinda dorky to me. Why can they use blanks at Disneyland and not at WDW? I love how the loud noise of the blanks scare people.

They use real Colt pistols at Disneyland, with gunpowder blanks. They are very loud, and you can hear them firing near City Hall on Main Street since the Hippo Pool section of the Jungle Cruise is directly behind Disneyland's City Hall.
