AP ticket upgrade question

I'm planning on upgrading my ticket the 1st day to an AP for my return trip in November.

Do they do the price difference based on what I paid for the ticket or what type of ticket it is?

We ended up getting free PHs with a PIN code. Not sure if I'll have to "pay" for the PH when I upgrade. I'm upgrading regardless just trying to budget.

The first step is to use your ticket to enter a park *before* you try and upgrade your ticket. This should lock in the value of the ticket as the current gate price for that ticket. You'll then be charged the difference between the gate prices of the ticket you have and the ticket you want.

But there's a slight chance that since it was purchased from Disney at a special offer you *might* only be credited with the actual amount that you paid for it.

OK so enter park and then turn around and upgrade? Good to know. I was just going to go as soon as we got there! I plan on buying a Tables in Wonderland card at the same time.
Thanks

I would guess you would end up with the vast amount (95%+) of what you paid credited towards the AP. I can see how it could get a little difficult trying to work out the math, at least it does for me.

We did the same thing today in a way. But we opted to just buy APs today since they were on sale, use the tickets we already paid for for our upcoming June trip this year then activate the APs in Jan 2015 when we return. That way we can use them again in Jan 2016 when we return.

Yeah, we're going to upgrade on our check-in day, September 8th. The only downside to it is that in order to get our money's worth, we will have to take our next long vacation by the 8th of next September.

Since by nature an AP includes PH, there is nothing you need to worry about there. The upgrade matters if it includes WP&M, and you have used one of those credits as then you need to upgrade to a premium AP instead of a normal AP. Once you use the ticket to enter the park, and go to guest relations, ask them to bridge your tickets as part of the upgrade. Using them first allows them to be bridged, but not all CMs will do the bridging automatically. Bridging is the process that brings the value of the ticket up to the current gate price from whatever was paid for the ticket. When doing this, make sure you know what you should be paying. If you have 5 day tickets with PH, know that the current price is $387.66 (including tax) and that an annual pas is $675.21 (including tax) so you shouldn't pay more than $287.55 per AP. Obviously the numbers will vary based on the ticket you have, but knowing what you should pay will help you immediately spot if the CM didn't properly bridge the tickets.
