Now that my family has received our refunds, I can calculate some data about our annual passes. My wife and daughter and I each had passes (one signature for parking and two flex passes). Our youngest daughter didn't need a pass yet. We bought our annual passes in January after a long period of not having passes or going to Disneyland, so naturally we ended up going fairly often while it was open, about once every couple weeks, or more. I was curious about how much we'd end up spending and what we'd get out of it, so I kept track of each trip, what we spent on food and souvenirs, which attractions we did and how many times. Here's the data:

Numbers of days of access to the parks: 50
Cost of passes (after refunds): $171.29 (Signature) + $95.86 (Flex) + $95.86 (Flex) = $363.01
Number of visits: 9 (Signature) + 8 (Flex) + 6 (Flex) + 6 (Free) = 29
Total man hours in the parks: 284
Average attractions per visit per person: 14.39
Average hours per visit: 9.76
Average attractions per hour: 1.47
Total number of attractions: 416
Total spent on food: $514.64
Total spent on merchandise: $273.19
Cost per attraction per person: $0.87
Cost per hour per person: $1.28
Average cost per visit per person: $12.52
Total discounts: $107.62
Most frequent attractions: Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Winnie the Pooh, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Rise of the Resistance success rate: 4/9

As an out-of-town guest, that is a depressing statistic.
Hopefully the system has gotten better. The app was very unreliable last year. I just went to Disney World and was easily able to get a boarding pass the one time I tried. If you know what you're doing and the app doesn't cheat you, I think it's probably fine.

And I think having two slot times to try helps a lot. Especially with knowing the capacity changes that might happen between the two times they can give out more the second time frame.
That, and being with a big group of people helps because there’s a better chance it won’t screw up for someone. I never got mine to work and had a newer phone than the others in our group who thankfully got it. In a group of 7 we sometimes had 6 people’s apps fail.
