I was extremely mad when the Hitchcock attraction was replaced by Shrek. Although Shrek is a fantastic attraction (and brilliant satire against Disney, and if you know the story behind Katzenberg, it’s even more droll), I loved the Hitchcock attraction even more. It is in fact my number one favorite attraction of all time, as it got me heavily into the master of suspense.
And of course, the ungodly act of closing Back to the Future for The Simpsons. I love Simpsons, don’t get me wrong. I can be considered one of their ‘fan-boys’. And I also loved what they did with the attraction. But, it isn’t UNIVERSAL. BTTF is part of that park’s history.
And that’s what bothers me, and I think it is a great argument most Disney bias fans goes against Universal. Universal does NOT have the ‘basic’ tradition Disney parks have always harnessed.
Now, Universal, the company, does have the history. More so, than Disney. Hell, Uncle Walt even worked for Universal at one time or another (we all know that story). But what depresses me, is people (and I bet, team members themselves) don’t even know who the founder of Universal is. And that’s sad.
What is sadder, is Universal has to get big-ticket names from other banners’ [i.e. Harry Potter, Simpsons, ect-ect], to get the biz that will compete with Disney. It is a routine we seen before at Disney, and even so, Universal (Terminator, Marvel, Beetlejuice, and long ago – Star Trek and Ghostbusters). But it has become more frequent now...
Still, as cool as Harry Potter is going to be, and as awesome as Simpsons is – I much rather see something else, Universal related. They could’ve taken a page from Disney’s book – and just revamp their attractions a bit. God knows, E.T. and Jurassic Park could use a little fine-tuning with their versions of audio-animatronics.
Take something like Earthquake. They took that attraction, dropped the Earthquake related aspect from the movie, make a fictitious spin on the same basic principle. And it's like they got a new attraction (and I happen to enjoy it - also a great little satirical jab to Disney's MGM (will ALWAYS be MGM in my heart) Studios very own Backlot Tour, which is, yet again, a jab toward Universal's very famous backlot tour back in Hollywood, in which Universal was the first studio to have such a thing). Whew!
Anyways, I am not complaining one bit. I love Universal Studios, and it will always have a special place in my heart (right up there with Disney). I grew up as a Steven Spielberg fan, so it was neat to experience his movies through various attractions. And it is also neat to see certain things that come out of my favorite movies.
However, my passion decreased just a bit. And with a unnecessary outdoor roller coaster in the works that ruins the complete atmosphere of a movie studio theme, I question and even have some resentment over the place I once fell in love...
Am I the only one?
