We are staying at the Wilderness Lodge from April 18 - 26. We were planning on flying, but the prices are so expensive. We are now considering driving - with our 6 and 4 years sons. Anyone drive from NY and have suggestions about good places to stop on the way down and back. We will be leaving from Long Island and would like to try to drive about 11 hours the first day. Thanks! :)

hey there

We drive down all the time. I'm about 45 minutes north of NYC (Exit 16 on the Thruway) and we go 287 to the NJ Turnpike to the end where it joins 95 at the Delaware Memorial bridge. We usually stop at Woodbridge, VA (The Holiday Inn Express), and Santee, SC and stay at the Hampton Inn. There are plenty of nice clean places to eat along the way, but we like Cracker Barrel.

We stay at the Country Inn & Suites in Santee, SC on the way down, and at the exit *after* the downtown Fredericksburg, VA exit on the way home. I forget the name of the hotel on that exit, but it's a nice business class hotel.

You'll probably be taking 95 all the way down, like most folks do. We go through Pennsylvania, though. Our route goes: 84 to 81 to 83 to 695 (Washington-Baltimore Beltway) to 95 to 4.

We stayed at the same places when we went down this past April. Our kids were 10 & 5 and the trip was pretty good except for 2 car sickness incidents on the way down, both of my kids threw up in Virginia.

I think the name of the hotel in Virginia is the Wingate Inn. It's the exit *after* the downtown Fredericksburg exit. This is very important. You don't want to stay at the downtown Fredericksburg exit.

I've been travelling by car to Florida since 1988. Honest to *insert your chosen diety here*, that Wingate Inn is the only acceptable place to stay in Virginia along 95.

A Great Thread...

This is a great thread and it is of particular interest to us.

We've always flown with the kids, but since our kids are now in college, my DW and I have decided to spend some of our DVC points on ourselves. We will be headed to the Flower and Garden Festival in May for our anniversary, we've decided to drive instead. The last time we drove was 27 years ago this coming May for our honeymoon. We have a much more comfortable vehicle these days than when we were first married and did the trip in an old Plymouth Arrow. I was an E3 in the USCG in those days and didn't make much money. We will have plenty of time to get there and we plan on visiting some relatives in Clearwater for a day or so before we arrive. We will be leaving from the Allentown, PA area, and I was thinking about pushing it the first day into the Carolinas the first day. I have begun to look for places to stay through AAA and the Entertainment Book. A couple from our church was telling us they usually go until they are just inside Georgia the first day. That seems like it might be too far. We won't be in that much of a hurry.

I would just like to know what exits to definitely stay away from. This will be an adventure for us...I just don't want it to turn into a nightmare.

Merry Christmas all...:xmas:
