My mom is friends with the family and she showed me this today in the newspaper. Interesting stuff. Sad.
Anthony J. "Tony" Pope
Memorial services for Anthony J. "Tony" Pope, 56, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Willoughby, were held Friday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, Calif.
Mr. Pope died Feb. 11, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Pasadena, Calif.
He was born March 22, 1947, in Cleveland.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having been stationed in Germany. Originally from Willoughby, he was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns Fan, even holding season tickets to their games while residing in Los Angeles, Calif.
Mr. Pope was one of the lucky guys that did what he loved for a living. He came to Los Angeles in 1973, and began a highly successful career as a voice over talent. Many of us have heard Tony, even if we never met him. He was the voice of Goofy for Disney for more than 11 years, with over 25 gold and platinum albums to his credit. He worked on hundreds of films, television, and cartoons, including "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," and is the first voice you hear at the opening of "Back to the Future." He is the voice of the Cheshire Cat and the King of Hearts in the Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland. He loved working for Mattel Toys and Fisher Price and took great pride in having the toy Chef Tony named after him. He is also loved by children all over the world as the voice of Furby.
Survivors are his wife, Pat Lentz; children, Melissa Pope, Alex Pope, and Marcella Lentz-Pope; siblings, Thomas W. (Susan) Pope of North Hollywood, Calif., Katherine "Kappy" (Matt) Melari of Willoughby, Kelly J. Pope of Willoughby, and James B. "Jay" (Janet) Pope of Montrose, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Tony Pope Memorial Fund, LACHSA Foundation, Library North, Room 1034, 5151 State University Dr., Los Angeles, Calif. 90032, (checks should be made out to: LACHSA Foundation, with "The Tony Pope Memorial Fund" noted on the memo line), or donors may call the Foundation office at (323) 343-2554.
