Buy it on the day you arrive and enjoy a few hours in the park that evening - that's what I do. Otherwise just buy it on your first day at the park.

They are activated immediately. The only way to purchase them and not have them activated immediately is to purchase them on line or at a Disney store and I am not sure if you all in the UK have them.

Immediately? The policy must have changed, it used to be activated upon first use. But honestly, how's one day gonna hurt ya? ;) Just go have fun. Chances are slim that you'll need that extra day at the end.

The countdown starts as soon as they print the ticket... Its impossible to have an AP start upon first use, since the Exp date is printed on the ticket

I imagine you could get the voucher at Downtown Disney, but for the sake of one day in 365, it's not worth the aggro.
DTD guest relations are only selling the real passes, not vouchers...

If you purchase them at the airport, DD, at a guest services window at one of the parks, they are activated immediately, not first use. The expiration date is printed on the back of the ticket to expire exactly one year from the purchase date. Other venues previously mentioned send you a voucher which, is activated the minute you turn it in for the pass.

If you really must have that extra day at the end, go to Guest Relations and ask to purchase an Annual Pass Exchange Certificate. The ticket will print out on normal stock, and in order to redeem the certificate, you will still have to go to Guest Relations or the ticket window at the TTC in order to redeem it the day you want it to start, so it doesn't save you a whole lot of time, but it is an option.

Being from the UK we can purchase AP vouchers on-line or by phone (from WDW) - the vouchers aren't activated until you present them at the WDW Ticket Window at the park or at Guest Relations - not at a resort.
Or you can purchase the AP at Orlando Int airport when you arrive or the day after you arrive at the WDW Ticket Window at the park or at Guest Relations.

People in the US and Canada can purchase them via phone or net from WDW and we get vouchers too. We can even do will call and just pick them up at any guest relations or ticket window.
