Revised? Yes, our first attempt at this project was a bit to rigid and ambitions for many people to take part in, so we’ve revised the project in hopes of attracting more people to participate.

The Project…

The project will produce a listing of all 44 full length Disney animated features ranked from best to worst based on an extensive rating system rather than by subjective tastes alone, box office receipts or award nominations. The rating system is explained in the next section of this post. What I’m looking for are other fans of Disney Feature Animation who would like to take part in this project. Each volunteer will consist of two people who will together view the films and submit a single set of ratings for each film viewed, two heads are better than one! You are welcome to submit ratings for all 44 films however I’m requesting that you commit to rating a minimum of two films from each of the six groups as listed below for a total of at least 12 films. Ratings will be accepted at any time via private message or e-mail to me and the ratings list will be updated and posted in a new threat on the first Sunday of each month beginning in June. In order for a film to appear on the list I will need to receive at least five ratings for that film. There is no scheduled closing date for this project.

The Rating System…

There are four major categories in the rating system, Story, Animation, Characters and Music. The major categories are then subdivided into 20 different subcategories which will be rated for each of the films. The rating system is a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 indicating a low rating and 10 a high rating. When deciding on a rating, try to rate the film on its own merit, in other words try not to compare the film your rating with other films. Below are some questions to help you rate each of the 20 subcategories.

Story
Set Up / Opening – How well did the start of the film set up the story?
Pace – Did the film move at a good pace? Was the pace too slow or too fast?
Length – Do you feel like the film is complete? Could it have been shorter or maybe longer?
Ending – Did the story come to a final conclusion? Are all the loose ends tied up?
Cohesiveness – Did all of the elements of the story make sense?
Message – Did the story evoke emotion? Did you laugh, cry, cheer? Did you understand the message?
Overall Quality – Did you enjoy the story? Is the story memorable?

Animation
Characters – Were the characters drawn well? Did it look like the characters need more work?
Backgrounds – Were the backgrounds pleasing? Did they aid the story? Did they distract from anything?
General Look / Feel – Did the overall animation fit the story?
Overall Quality – Did you enjoy the animation?

Characters
Main / Hero – Could you relate to the main character? Did you laugh, cry, cheer the main character?
Villain – Did the villain feel like a villain? Did the villain evoke emotion (scare or frighten) you?
Supporting Cast – Could you relate to the supporting cast? Did you feel anything for the cast?
Voice Work – Did the voices fit the characters? Did the animation fit the sound?
Overall Quality – Did you like the characters? Are they memorable?

Music
Placement – Do you feel that the music was placed in the right parts of the story? Was it distracting?
Story Advancement – Did the music assist with telling the story?
Feeling – Did the music evoke emotion?
Overall Quality – Did you enjoy the music? Are the songs used memorable?

When submitting your ratings, please include your WDWMagic.com name, the name of the film being rated and list the 20 categories with your rating for each. The ratings received for each film will be added together by separate category and then averaged. The average score from all 20 sub categories will then be added together to give each film a total score. All 44 films will eventually be ranked based on their updated final score.
