An interesting take on DLP's Problems

I recently spoke with a very influential graphic designer with international connections (I can't say her name) about EuroDisney's recent woes. She told me that their problems have been not only because of the WDS' sad state, but also marketing problems from their former director. In the design industry, "One woman is basically credited with destroying Disneyland Paris's reputation in France" because of her overmarketing hype (similar to Cynthia Harris's problems at DL).

I thought this was an interesting point of view that few of us have considered before.

Was she the one who came up with that "Need Magic?" thing?
Or was she before that. Becuase that campaign was awful!
Here's a really great paper on some theories about DLP's problems right from the start:

Sorry that it took me so long to reply. I've been busy.

Yes, she came up with that campaign, as well as others. The designer I spoke to told also me that within France's elite social classes, EuroDisney is considered to have "bombed." Yes, I know that sounds odd, considering DL's beauty and its status as the most-visited tourist destination in France; but that's the golden phrase: "TOURIST destination." The French consider the Walt Disney Studios; the multiple, overpriced, over-numerous hotels; and the truly awful ad campaigns to be problems for the DLP Resort. This is part of the reason that the resort hasn't been locally supported like it should be. :(

I wish I could talk more about my source for this information, but I really can't. Let it suffice to say that she's responsible for many famous graphics campaigns you've seen, and her best friend is one of the most influential designers in France. This isn't just their opinion about DLP; they really, really know what they're talking about.

I need to add an important postscript:

Although we Americans consider graphic design to be very influential and exciting as a commercial art field, Europeans hold it as a fine art. That's why an ad campaign carries such weight within the French market. If a graphics job is done well, Europeans really like it; and if not, they really despise it.

It's a culture thing.

Isn't this is pretty much agreed on by everyone?
Too many hotels, bad marketing and TWDS. And not just the locals.
I would think that the bigger reason DLP isn't supported by the locals is the devistatingly high unemployment rates in France right now.
I would also think that France's elite social classes wouldn't holliday at DLP anymore than New York's elite social class would vacation at WDW.
It's an image thing, I would think.
