An inexpensive solution to property-wide transit

Those who know me here, know that I am advocate for expanding the monorail system, or other forms of transit systems. I have a brand new refreshing idea that doesn't require building tracks!

I call it PGRT or Personal Group Rapid Transit. It would work like the PRT system found at MASDAR City. The PRT system at MASDAR City runs underground on specialized concrete roadways using battery powered electric golf cart-sized vehicles that operate on demand and a centrally controlled system guides it automatically to a user's requested destination.

For WDW, I propose something similiar using the roads already in place that currently cars and buses ride on. The vehicles would be driverless automated electric modified buses powered by battery and wireless charging stations located at stops and along the roads. The roads would be modified with communication systems and sensors for vehicle control and automation.

The vehicles would travel on dedicated lanes that would be converted from current lanes used for bus and car traffic. These lanes would be separated from other lanes using concrete dividers and would be fenced off from human and animal crossings.

To compensate for reduced motor traffic lanes, parking structures would have to be created at strategic locations in order to get people out of their cars and to transfer to the system.

The vehicles themselves could even be the current bus fleet converted into PGRT vehicles!

This system is cheap to build because it uses current infrastructure, which includes the roads and bus fleet. It is ideal for the environment because it's all electrical. It's fast and convenvient because central computer control guarantees that there is never a traffic jam. It's flexible because it allows for on-demand traffic routing to any destination on property.

Above all, it would be fun to ride, innovative, unique, creative, and it would be an attractive in and of itself worth alone seeing WDW for!

Sounds cool :)

Only downside beside any cost would be altering everything while the current system is still in use. How would they be able to do that?

Reminds me of when I-95 was under construction here in S. Florida or when I-4 was being widened in Orlando. Inconvenient during the construction phase, but worth it!

Hey I am all for it, I think it would make a nice experience if done correctly.

I could get in one of the vehicles after drinking at Epcot and it could take me to my resort based on my Magic Band :)

I think you could work with the current grid to create the system, Epcot's terminal is already built for East and West expansion. I'm seeing a station at DHS, DAK, and Springs.

Exactly. Now that My Magic + development is winding down, maybe they can move those same people to work on this project at the same set annual budget? I know that program had a steep learning curve which resulted in budget overruns, but those extra dollars spent could be value-added if those already-funded and learnt skill sets could continue employment and shifted to a project like this...

It certainly is something that would make the time at WDW more memorable. Less cars is always a good thing to me :)

That was my original take when I pushed for monorail expansion years back. There's no will to do it because, after the capital to build it, the system is at the mercy of monopoly suppliers because of non-standard parts. So, each time it breaks down, huge capital must be spent repeatedly. A system like the one I just proposed would use standard parts, which means multitudes of suppliers competing for quality and price.

I think that is an excellent idea! Anything to relieve the congestion on the roads around WDW. And also kill the musak played in the buses. I may be hallucinating, but I thought I heard them playing Hedwig's Theme from HP once.
