How easy/difficult is it to amend a reservation to add days on either side of a trip?

For instance, if we booked a trip and then decided to arrive a day earlier, is there an additional cost involved (aside from the extra day's stay)?

Extra cost depends on how close you are to travel.

It is usually easier to add to the end of the trip.

it will also depend on if you booked your trip using any promotions like room discount, or free dining, charges would depend on if the promotion was still available and also if the added day or days fell into the promotion dates. For example if you had a room discount and added a day that did not fall in the promotion range you would have to pay full price for that day and may have to check out and re check in when your promotion started.
