So my sister and I made the decision yesterday we are going to run in next years Wine and Dine half marathon. I've never run 13 miles in my life so this will be out first half!! Are we crazy? I'm beginning to think so!!

My sister ran track and cross country in school and I did cross country so hopefully we won't finish too close to the bottom of the pack. Started training last night!! At least we have a whole year ahead of us!!

As of two years ago, I never ran a race. But on Saturday I will be doing my first half and have scheduled a full for 2012.

You are not crazy, once you start the training you will be surprised at your own accomplishments.

Good Luck

In 2005 I went from being able to run 3 miles in May to completing the NYC Marathon in November. With heart and dedication, it most certainly can be done! You have far far far more time than you will need to successfully accomplish that goal. Start creating a base now (maybe 3 miles a few times per week), and once you're about 4 months out from the race, start a recommended Half Marathon Training Plan. You'll do great!

That is plenty of time.

I was a sort of runner. Doing a few miles here and there. Maybe a 5K once in a while. the WDW Wine and Dine 1/2 was my first race over 5K and my first really major race (over 1,000 entrants)

A half (at least to me) is not THAT much of a distance. Don't get me wrong, it is significant, but not really long. To me a marathon is some real work. I debate doing one again just because I loathe to put in the time required.

I know we haven't officially signed up for it yet, but I'm determined to do it. Even if this is the only race I ever do. To be able to say I ran a half marathon at Disney is pretty neat..

My aunt is doing the Goofy run (I think that's what it's called) next month I believe which I think she said is a half marathon and then a full marathon the next day. She runs like 20 miles a day. She's nutzo! haha.. But I am def looking forward to seeing how I improve after each run. Last night we did 10 seconds running/50 seconds walking and did 1.1 miles in 16min 26 seconds. :sohappy:

You have over a year to train so there is no reason you wouldn't be ready. Register as soon as you can, that will keep your motivation going.

Clearly you have not met Nick (DonaldDuck) on these boards yet. You will .... you will. :D

I debated doing the Goofy. The WDW marathon is, quite frankly, at a horrible time - a week or so into January. For me, living in Northern NJ, that means all of my long milage final training weeks are in horrible weather and also right in the middle of the holiday season. How am I supposed to run 4+ days a week, with a 18 - 22 miler thown in there with work, shopping, holiday parties, family events, etc. Not enough time in the week. I did it last year for the marathon, but it was a real bear.

Like the others have said, you got this!

IF you want it and are willing to work for it.

Last October 6th, I struggled to complete 3 miles (running and walking) in less than 40 minutes in my first "run".

In the past year, I have run almost 1000 miles, did my first half marathon in Feb, another in April, doing two of them this weekend, and will complete my first full on Dec 3rd.

And I had no running background except for what they "made" me run playing football and baseball as youth.

Jog a slow pace and have fun! Did my first ever half in January and I'm doing the full this January. At least you have cross-country experience. I was a sprinter in jr. high and high school. Never ran more than a mile until last year.

Jogging will definitely be what I'll be doing! I'm not looking for a good time. My sister and I are going to train at 11 minute miles. That way we have time for potty breaks and (most importantly) character encounters!!! :D

Do it! You will have a blast!...

...just be warned though, these Disney races are addicting!! :D

That's an understatement. In two years, I have run The Princess 1/2 Marathon, the Wine & Dine 1/2 marathon, The Full Disney Marathon, and the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon. And everytime I look at my medals, instead of saying "WOW-what an accomplishment", I think to myself...Hmmm, I still the Donald, the TinkerBelle, etc...

Before this year, I never ran more than 5 miles. This year, I completed The Disney 1/2 Martahon, Madison Mini-Marathon (1/2 marathon), and the F&W 1/2 Marathon. I've also done the Expedition Everest Challenge, and Warrior Dash this year.

My wife had never run before this year, but ran 2 half marathons this year with me. She started training in February or March, and was race ready by August.

Really...If you have 4-6 months, you can get ready.....seeing as you're looking at a year out, you have plenty of time. :)

No kidding...I think they have that RunDisney booth at the expo just to taunt you with all the cool medals. My wife and I had already planned to do the Disney 1/2 marathon in January just for the special Donald Medal, but then she saw the Princess 1/2 Marathon, and she said "We totally need to come down here for a few days so I can get that."

So yeah...that's how it starts.
