'Alias' to End Five-Season Run in May
Wednesday November 23 6:48 PM ET

"Alias" is going undercover for good. The spy drama starring Jennifer Garner will end its five-season run in May, ABC announced Wednesday, promising a big finish.

"'Alias' is not going to wind down as it comes to an end, it's going to rev up, and we're going to make it the event it deserves to be," ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson said in a statement.

The series co-stars Victor Garber, Ron Rifkin, Carl Lumbly and Kevin Weisman. It was created by executive producer J.J. Abrams, who is also part of ABC's popular "Lost."

Airing at 8 p.m. EST Thursday this season, "Alias" has struggled to hold its audience against the competition, especially CBS' "Survivor: Guatemala." Last week, the ABC show drew about 7 million viewers compared to about 19 million for "Survivor."

Garner and her husband, actor Ben Affleck, are expecting their first child around Christmas. Her pregnancy was written into "Alias" for her character, a globe-trotting spy.

It was bound to happen.

After a brilliant debut season and two pretty decent follow ups, last year's 4th season was "dumbed down" to broaden it's appeal and win better ratings. While the ratings did increase somewhat, this was more due to it following "Lost" on Wednesdays. Even though they picked up their momentum again with the final 5 episodes and tied up a lot of the mysteries introduced 4 yrs ago in the first episodes of season one, the show had really alienated it's core fans like myself. In addition, the chemistry that had previously existed between Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan was noticably missing when the two broke up in real life. When Jen became pregnant, that was the last straw, and even when they killed off Vartan's character, they didn't give the best impression she was any bit saddened by his departure. I suppose they figured any shots of her sobbing would have seemed insincere, so they didn't even try. Anyway...

I'd like to believe they'll be able to deliver on their promise to go out with a bang. Crossing my fingers.

Add me to the list of people who were absolutly riveted the first couple of seasons but slowly lost interest...

I loved the old SD-6 story line.....but it did not get the ratings.....when SD-6 went away, so did I.
