I've never seen or had reports of issues with alerts. When did your problems begin?
It's always been like that, I think. I don't think I started really noticing it until a few months ago though... Description of behavior below (sorry, no video this time! And sorry for being vague, because if I could pin it down to a single behavior, I would certainly have raised the issue before).
I think the reason this is happening (and this is just based off of my experience, so it could be completely wrong) is because threads are merged together. And for "unwatching" threads, I typically miss an update when this happens, which automatically stops giving you alerts for that thread... at least that's what happens for me. For example, if I have more than 20 alerts (I think that's how many appear in the pull-down alert box) and I happen to have a thread reply be alert #21, then I might miss it if I don't check "all alerts". If that makes any sense.
No, that's not it. I sit directly on the all alerts page and refresh it from time to time...so, I'm not relying on the drop down window. I only use the drop down if I'm on the app (which isn't often). Also, I scroll through all the alerts (I get about 20 - 60 a day, were I to guess at a number)...my point there is that I did account for pagination of the Alert window.
No, what I've noticed is...for example, take the Saget thread. I'll visit the thread, make a comment...for a period (not sure how long) it will show alerts when people reply to the thread, but sometimes it will show just one reply, or no replies, even though I was just on that thread.
Sometimes, I won't see an alert for a while, and then one will pop up...for example, when someone likes a post or quotes my post. Then I'll go back into the thread and notice that several comments that I didn't receive alerts for were made, sometimes up to a page or more.
If I revisit the thread, alerts will start up again.
Now, I just assumed that the software has a "after a certain amount of posts stop alerting replies" setting or something (even if it's an administrative setting, not a user setting)...but, I've seen it do other goofier stuff.
Like, I'll visit the Spirited thread, and see one notice...or comment on a thread and see no notices, and later go back to see lots of replies (even quoted posts) have shown up.
So, then I thought...maybe it's related to how long it's been since I visited the thread? (either using time, number of other threads I've visited, or number of posts since my last visit to that thread as the deciding metric)
But, then, sometimes, I'll see a "xxx has replied to thread" appear randomly for a thread I haven't been to in months, and go to the thread and see lots of replies that I never got alerts for.
I've compared it between "busy" threads like Saget and Spirit threads and less busy threads, like the Blackfish thread, for example...but noted the same wonky behavior.
I've also checked Watched Threads, and indeed, the threads are listed there on my list...so...<shrug>
Note, I'm not complaining in any way. I think it's a neat feature, and overall it functions pretty well, but these are quirks...probably ones I notice only because I tend to lurk on the Alerts page and use that to keep up with running conversations. But, it is quirky.
So, when I saw this post, that popped into my mind.
