It's an article about OIA (MCO to you out-of-town Disney fans).

They are instituting a program where, if you pay and are willing to be fingerprinted every five years, you don't have to take off your shoes, get your laptop out, etc. You go through quicker lines.

$85.00. That's the cost.

If you don't want to pay up, you can still go through the regular way. :)

Only valid if you sign up for this program in Indianapolis or Washington DC though.

Looks similar to me like a TDO experiment to create longer standby lines by increasing the amount of FP's.

This is going to slow things way down to MCO. Be prepared for longer waits.

This is an interesting twist.

Pre check has been available for awhile for frequent flyers through selected programs but it is randomly assigned and free.

You do not know if you are good or not until they scan your pass. First time I used it, it was a disaster. Last month, it was awesome. It was like going back 20 years ago... Basically just walk through security. No shoes off, no laptop out, no body scan, etc.

Basically you opt in... And they accept you. No complex enrollment.

Now separate they have a program called global entry for expedited immigration and customs. For that you do have to pay ($100 for a couple years) and go through an interview and finger printing. And it took basically a month+ to complete.

This story sounds like a hybrid. Wonder if they are keeping it free for the frequent flyers?

Basically it sounds like just using the global entry model for pre check...

Here, pre check is an entirely separate screening area... Not a line cut.

Edit: I do see the concern tho when they just steal capacity vs add it.

Here, it was added capacity

They have had this system in place at ORD (Ohare) in Chicago for awhile now, don't know how popular it is or not though. I guess if you traveled for business a lot it would make sense but to the average American who usually takes 1 vacation a year, not so much worth the cost

$85/5 = just $17/yr. People pay more than that to take an extra bag on the flight :)

It's up front money which people don't like... but the biggest hurdle is the registration. If it's anything like Global Entry, it was a PITA. But Global Entry wasn't implemented to be very high volume. Very manpower intensive and slow to complete.

And watch out tinhats.. they give you a RFID enabled ID card ;)
