Hi Dalabar,

First off welcome to the boards.

I have never been the happiest of flyers but my wife and I took a trip to WDW just 2 months after September 11 and I didn't feel any more or less apprehensive than I usually do. I think the likelihood of a second attack using commercial airlines is pretty unlikely. Also, with the thousands of commercial planes in the air every day in this country I figure the odds are better that I would get in a car wreck on the way to the airport than they are that my plane would be hijacked.

So relax, don't worry, get on the plane and have a great trip to WDW or wherever you are going. I'm sure all will be well.

you wouldnt be normal if in the back of your mind you werent thinking "hmmm is THAT guy a terrorist? how about her??" but you cant live your life like that, because thats what the terrorists want. they want you to change your lifestyle and live in fear of them. have faith and pray before you go :)
Ive taken a few plane trips since 9-11 and to be perfectly honest, the amount of airport security everyone has to go to really helpped to put my mind at ease :) hope this post helpped

Personally, I was always more afraid of crashing than terrorists. :lookaroun The last couple of flights I've been on though have been really smooth and fast and I'm starting to relax more. (and when I say relax, I mean realize that I have no control over it, so I may as well sit back and accept whatever fate has on its agenda for the day)

Welcome to the boards.

As stated earlier, you have a better chance of getting in a car accident than a plane crash - pre 9/11 or not. If something happens, not much you can do about it.

If the anxiety is about the flight itself, you can help this by taking a very prescriptions from Mr. Daniels or the Crown Royal. When all else fails, try and get a window seat, grab a pillow, and make an effort to fall asleep before the plane takes off. This is easier in a large airport where your flight may be 10th or greater in line for take-off. Like recently in Atlanta, where my flight to Wichita was 15th in line. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've heard that the peak rush in Atlanta gets pretty bad, 30 minute delay just from the traffic alone at worst. Be thankful that they are building a new 5th runway to open in 2006.

I have always been a nervous flyer more out of fear of crashing. I also get motion sick so I always take Dramamine before a flight. However, I would prefer to spend 2 hours on a plane than 20 hours in a car to get to Florida. I do have limitations when flying because I will not fly on a small plane. If the plane does not seat at least 100 people, I won't fly on it. Whenever I make flight arrangements, I have to check the size of the plane before I book.

Well if you haven't flown in 3 years, i'm guessing its as much to do with your lifestyle as it is the anxiety of flying itself. So if you didn't fly very often to begin with, its going to make this anxiety worse.

The only thing that can change your anxiety of a hijacking et al is you. We can give you all the stats and scenarios that are more likely to happen but it all comes down to you just relaxing about it and getting on a flight.

As far as in-flight pharmaceuticals, avoid Dramamine and the various other brand names that have Diphenhydramine HCI as the active ingredient. Dramamine is an allergy medicine reboxed/marketed as a motion sickness reliever. So if you have allergies, great, but if you want to get to sleep, avoid it.

The best sleep medicines are Ambien(Zolpidem tartrate) and Sonata(Zaleplon). Ambien for international flights and Sonata for less than 6 hour flights. Ambien will put you out while Sonata will, but in heavy turbulence you will awaken.

Definately avoid any Melatonins, those are placebos. Ativan, like Dramamine, will only leave you lethargic.
