...not sure what else to call them.

Lately I've been feeling the 'want' for a new decent p&s but after a couple years of carrying around my DSLR I want something that offers some versatility besides just pointing and shooting.

I want to stay relatively inexpensive, around $400-ish and I want it to be basically pocket sized. So that rules out any of the mirrorless systems; too expensive for what I want and too large physically.

I was milling around Best Buy the other day and found 2 that I think fit my needs - the Canon G15 and the S110. Anyone have experience with either? I know the G-series is pretty highly regarded but I've never personally used one.

The G15 is larger but two things immediately stick out; it has a viewfinder and it has a fast lens - 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 ...BUT the s110 is definitely pocket size which is nice.

here are thte links to the two in case you want to look at them and give me your $.02 :)

Perfect for walking around in great light, but as you know... when the light drops so does their performance. Even "advanced" P&S will face a lot of noise.

But if you're just taking snapshots, then why not

That's really all I want it for. I want something that I can throw in my pocket or leave in my glovebox, but I still want to have control over the shot which is why I want something with manual controls.

Unless I leave the house with the intent to shoot I rarely have my DLSR with me, I'm hoping having something with me all the time will spark some spontaneous creativity.

I'm a big DOF guy so the point and shoots just don't have the lens quality / aperture speeds I like to use.

Check out the RX100, it costs more, but it's sized more like the S100 and has a much bigger sensor (same sensor size as in the Nikon 1 series). I haven't used one, but I've heard great things about it

I wholeheartedly agree with gsrjedi....the RX100 is a fantastic camera. If I did not have either one of my dslrs with me...this would be the camera I would want. I bought my wife one, so I have had an opportunity to play with one. Consider me impressed....

I've seen the rx100 and it's a nice camera but it's more $$$ than I want to spend. If this were going to be my only camera I could maybe justify spending $650 (I think that's what it was last time I looked at it) on a p&s but since this is basically just a secondary camera I'm sticking to my budget.

Do you think you will ever be happy with it though coming from a DSLR? I think I would always be thinking 'The DSLR would be doing a better job of this".

Good luck with it - let us know which one you get and how it works out.

I would but only for work I don't care about ... like if I go to an inlaws bbq, people always ask me to take pictures so I'd just bring that little thing along with me and who cares what the results are

My thoughts exactly. I'm not going to be using it to take photos I want to frame and hang on my wall, just for "snapshots".

All other things being equal, I doubt 1% of the total enrollment here could tell the difference between an 8x10 print from a G15 or RX100 compared to a crop DLSR. I think either would be a good choice for the requirements outlined.

Addressing the OP's question, I would prefer the Canon G15 given the choice of the two. A lot of pro's use that as their pocket camera of choice. That is what I wanted as a pocket camera until recent.

I really want the Fujifilm EX-1 or X-Pro1 but likely going with the X-10 until they perfect the point & shoots that are running android and have built-in wifi or a data connection like the Samsung Galaxy or that crappy one Nikon just came out with. Why Fuji? Because it looks like an old Leica rangefinder and can shoot in fully manual mode, has a 2.8 lens.

(Daniel, your website doesn't want to work for me. I'm running Chrome.)

Dang, it isn't complete. It's a work in progress.

It should partly be up though.

An 8x10 from a G___ would really be pushing it.

I complain about grain when I enlarge 8x10 Prints fom 6x7 MF film.
