Quick question to those of you who have been to WDW in October..Our vacation is a 14 night one..If all going to plan,it will be at AKL with the free DDP..They are only 3 signature restaurants I want to try, so that leaves us 8 TS restaurant meals at one credit per restaurant.Heres my question..Were hoping to go at school holidays Oct 10th - 24th..What are the odds of booking the other credits when we get there..Example,if I take my DS eye phone,we can check out availability from our room on various other restaurants like Le Chefs or H.O.B...We have about 12 other places but not to bothered on what day or time to pick..Has anyone done this " On a wing " ????.Kinda plan..

We have done October trips twice, once in 2011 and last week (sigh, this time last week we were heading to ToT before our Dine with an Imagineer). I don't know why, but this trip was noticabley much more crowded than our trip in 2011 which was during the same week. IMO, you are better off booking what you think you want when your 180 day mark hits in April and then as it gets closer or while you are there tinker around with them. If you want, you can hold back on 2 or 3 credits to book more on the fly. Although you may not get a restaurant you think you want, you may be impressed with a restaurant you may never have thought of. I wouldn't leave all 8 TS credits to chance. You would be staying long enough to book a lot of what you may want and also tour more on the fly. It's the best of both worlds.

On another note, AKL is our all around favorite resort. The atmosphere, the smell of the lodge, the food options, the savannahs, the rooms, the pool is all just awesome. Sure, it's not on the loop or an EC area resort so you do have to take a bus everywhere, but the travel times are not nearly as bad as the "haters" will lead you to believe. Infact, we found that the bus transportation was just as fast to most places as any other resort. It gives you a chance to be all about Disney by day and feeling a bit removed and relaxed from Disney at night. We just stayed at BWV and while walking to and from EC and DHS was nice, the bus to MK and AK felt like it took forever and the bus to and from DTD was a nightmare.

We've gone annually at this time of year since 2006, and it gets busier every year. It's not impossible, but I'd plan ahead as much as you can, and be really flexible on the days you don't plan ahead. You may end up trekking to other resorts or Downtown to find last-minute accommodations.

Winging it is something I would never do if on the dining plan.

We often wing it on our short trips, but we never have to worry about leaving dining credits on the table at the end of a trip. If nothing comes up that we want, quick service is always an option. This is not really the case when on the DDP. It will only take a couple days worth of "nothing available" before you find yourself with no quick service credits and extra table service ones you can't use.

I would make the ADR's as soon as you can.

We went in October last year (without the dining plan) and I got every ADR I wanted but it took planning. I ended up tweaking our plan quite a bit up until we went, but I felt confident knowing I had the reservations to fall back on if things didn't work out.
I just don't think it's really possible to wing things at Disney anymore. It gets busier every year, and more and more people are making decisions in advance. It makes it tough to be spontaneous, that's for sure! I think it's best to try to make ADRs now, and then mess around with them later if you change your mind (for example, I made a last minute reservation at Via Napoli a few weeks before we left with no issues).

We go at the last minute all the time and I almost always make reservations the day of. Yesterday we had about 10 choices at Epcot, 2 at Animal kingdom, 3 at DHS and no options at magic kingdom. There were about 6-8 options at DTD and lots of choices at the resorts. We actually ended up making both lunch and dinner reservations the day of. It really depends on if you are willing to try new places, if you have picky eaters and if you have specific restaurants you can't miss.

We go at that time and we always have ADR's (I am a planner), so I don't know what winging it would be like, I just know I couldn't do. I even have ADR's for Uni whilst we are there! Like I said I am a planner. If you don't want to plan that much then just make some at the places you really want at the times you want. We will hopefully be there at the same time so just in case you do want to plan you can start 13 Apr. LOL

We'll be there'd same time as you. We will be making Reservations in April but will change them many times before we leave. If you don't book them you do run the risk of finding everywhere booked but of course you can use TS credits at CS places. I would think you'd find somewhere, but may be DD or a resort.
