Actors comments on Disney Pay

I've heard several actors over the years make comments referring to the "lack of pay" from Disney, when it comes to offering their voices/talents to animated films.

My question/curiosity is this:

(1) Most of these actors/actresses are very well to do, and as such don't really need the money.

(2) The tendency in most contractural situations these days is that the size of the contract seems to overshadow the actual talent displayed on film/voice, or on the field.

(3) How important is it for these actors/actresses to be highly paid for this type of work. I personally would be honored if the most famous animated film company in the entire world asked me to provide my talents to any of their films.

Don't get me wrong, they should be compensated in some form.
Whether that is a contractural fee, or royalties on film/ticket sales, or from merchandise sales from the film. And I'm sure they are compensated in some form. I just can't stand the fact that millionares want more money, and then want to complain about the fact they aren't paid enough. The job of any company hiring anyone for any position, is to negotiate they lowest price possible. Not the highest. (Take a look at the NHL, MLB, NFL, and NBA for examples of how not to write contracts. ) Tell me those entities haven't suffered for writing outrageous deals to overhyped players not worth money.

The overwhelming majority of actors that have done voice work for Disney and Pixar animated movies say that it is the toughest acting job they have ever done!

They could make a lot more money doing their regular gig, than what Disney pays them for voice work. That's the bottom line. So, they complain. But other forces are at work.

In addition to salary, certain assurances are given to these actors that they will be used in other productions (TV, Radio, Stage, Movies, etc.).

Disney is a BIG studio and commands a lot of power! It's the studio system.

Also, how do you think Pixar got all those big time actors to do voice work for Toy Story? Well, Pixar didn't do squat. Disney got that voice talent lined up.

This makes me wonder how well Pixar will do post-Disney. Will they still be able to get the major stars to do voice-work? Dreamworks does ok, but with Spielburg, Katzenburg, and Geffen in charge, they have a lot of Hollywood power.

Interviews

I have heard stars interviews where they say that doing voices for Disney and other animated movies was a FAMILY choice. They wanted to do something that their kids can watch. Maybe money isn't always the reason they choose to do something. I have to say, the stars voices are never the reason my family goes to see an animated movie. I will also say, IMHO, that some voices have been an icredible match for the character they are portraying. The one that always comes to mind first is James Earl Jones as Mufasa in the Lion King. Sometimes though I really believe that it's the unknown voices that lend the most believable voice to animation because I don't picture the voice behind the character, I only picture the character. If that makes any sense?

I remember reading somewhere a while back that the typical voice work for an animated feature is about two weeks of half day readings during which time the actors can come dressed any way they like without having to sit through makeup or even shaving and bathing before rolling in….

Any kind of royalties on a film that makes over a hundred million dollars for what would amount to about a week of work for most people under conditions that most of us could only hope for doesn’t sound all that bad to me… Maybe Disney and Pixar don’t have air conditioning in their voice studios or something. I don’t know but I can’t imagine that doing the two Toy Story movies was a more trying experience for Tom Hanks than doing “Cast Away” or “Forest Gump”. Know what I mean? ;)

Hadn't looked at this thread in a while but.....

Since there is a current thread up on the home page regarding unions/pay scales, it reminded me of this thread that I had started and I wanted to view it again. Reason being is, I'm wondering what, if anything, does the screen actors guild ever say to their members regarding voice overs for animated films? Do they negotiate fees on behalf of the actors in these cases? If so, anyone out there have info on any given actor/movie they did for Disney, and what they were paid? Peeked my own curiosity.
