ABC to Air Real-Life ER Miniseries

HOUSTON (AP) -- Producers of a six-part series debuting on ABC promise the drama of "ER" with the reality of an ER. "Houston Medical," starring the staff, doctors and patients at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital, starts its run Tuesday night. The goal is to bring home the real-life drama of one of the nation's busiest trauma centers. "We needed a good trauma center that could supply action, but we also searched for character in the community around the hospital that would allow us to take the show beyond the halls of medicine," said Chuck Bangert, an executive producer along with Lou Gorfain. ABC is expanding on 2000's successful "Hopkins 24/7" documentary taped at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Producers from New Screen Concepts visited institutions across the country last spring before choosing Memorial Hermann. Shooting on the six, one-hour episodes began last summer, with crews rotating around the clock to capture life at one of the two high-level trauma centers in the nation's fourth-largest city.
