(Digital Spy) -- ABC has paid a figure reported to be in the region of $4.5m for a documentary from British broadcaster Granada about troubled pop star Michael Jackson.

The move comes weeks after rival network NBC announced it would be dedicating an episode of Dateline NBC to the subject of the star's ever-changing face, although it is now thought NBC's production will be somewhat wider-ranging in order to compete with ABC's offering.

Granada's Living With Michael Jackson will be transmitted on the ABC network on February 7th; NBC's was originally scheduled to go out on February 17th but news agency Reuters is reporting the network may move this date up.

The Granada documentary features interviews conducted by Martin Bashir, a journalist famed for his questioning of Diana, Princess of Wales for the BBC in 1995. Bashir was with Jackson during the now infamous "baby dangling" incident which took place November in Berlin.
