HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Noah's Ark is setting sail for ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney" movie franchise.
An original musical adaptation of the biblical story will feature a combination of live-action and computer animation, and the story will be told from the animals' point of view.
"The story of Noah's Ark obviously has been told many, many times," executive producer Scott Sanders told Daily Variety. "The rationale for us to do it now is that we can turn it on its ear, while continuing to be respectful of the Biblical story."
Sanders said the tale's message of tolerance and harmony remains particularly relevant.
"All the creatures have to interact for so many days, living and breathing and surviving with each other," he said.
Sanders is exploring options for musical contributions and said he expects a script to be done by the end of the year. Pic likely would be ready for the 2003-04 TV season.
Sanders' Creative Battery production banner ultimately plans to adapt the project for the stage. Whether ABC's Disney parent will be involved has not yet been determined.
"Our mission is to create and develop intellectual properties that have a live stage life to them but also have crossover media opportunities," Sanders said.
The story was previously turned into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.
