Well, we just got back from taking our two year old twins on their first Disney World vacation. My expectations were sky high, of course! Let's just say this vacation was definitely a memorable one. Our daughter woke up with a stomach bug one morning, our son developed croup one night... But the worst of it all came on Monday, November 12, 2012.
The day started off normal. We started off to Epcot to visit the World Showcase. My grandparents were with us as well. Grandma is in a wheelchair nursing back a stress fracture on her femur. This posed certain complications with boarding rides and those types of things. But, all in all, she was doing very well and hadn't had any major problems. Well, that was until we got to the Mexico pavilion in Epcot. We were boarding the boats in the Gran Fiesta Tour and I noticed there weren't any rails for her to grab onto to help her board the boat. I turned around to help the twins get situated and right as I turned around to see if I could assist Grandma (who is VERY independent) I see her falling backwards into the water. Yes, that's right.. INTO THE WATER. My 70 year old grandmother... My husband jumps in the water and pulls her up where her head is out of the water (the sides are much deeper than the middle, which is where she fell). She was down there for about thirty minutes before the paramedics could get her out. She was taken to Celebration Health and had to stay in the hospital until Friday. She's suffering some internal bleeding that she is following up with with her primary care physicians. And she is bruised up from head to toe. But, considering the circumstances... she is doing great.
The Cast Members at Epcot were BEYOND amazing in helping us. They got my husband new shoes from the Norway store (Helly Henson's) and the kids toys, hats and tons of stickers to preoccupy them. They took us back to the hotel (after Grandma was taken to the ER) by a bus so my husband didn't have to ride the bus in his sopping wet clothes. For a bad situation, they did their best to make it better.
I wanted a memorable trip for my kids' first time to Disney.. and that it was! Now that we can "kind of" laugh about it, I'm regretting not taking pictures for the scrapbook!
