A single lens.

I just found out I'm going traveling in December and January.... yay! Unfortunately not to anywhere as luxurious and developed as WDW.... boo! I'm gonna be in Guatemala and Belize, on the Caribbean side and in Guatemala City.

I am gonna bring some gear with me, however due to luggage constraints (and the fact that I intend on doing some diving while I'm there), I can only bring A SINGLE LENS... dun dun dun. (well, maybe a single zoom lens plus a prime or the lensbaby)

Within my arsenal I have the 18-55 kit lens, 50mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8, 80-210mm 4.5, 28-200 3.5, and the lensbaby which is about 50mm 2.0.

I'm thinking the 28-200, but I'm up for suggestions.

I'm also willing to buy the right glass at the right price for the trip.

Wow, that's tough. 3 questions to clarify:

What is your preference on focal length?
Are you gonna need speed?
Are you gonna need reach?

I would say the 50/1.8 and take another, either the kit or 28-200. 50s are usually dang sharp and fairly fast. That'll cover most speed requirements.

But iIf you're going to be taking landscapes outside, you really need to go wide. I hate DSLRs for that. Even 17 or 18 at the wide end just doesn't cut it with a 1.5x or 1.6x. Based on what you said, that seems to be a better option that having a long zoom in a city.

What's the image quality difference between the 28-200 and the 80-210? Which gives a better perspective compression (if that matters to you)?

My gut is the 50 1.8 and the 80-210.

Any word on that Tokina 11-16? That'd be a great lens to have...

The lenses are about the same in image quality, but the 80-210 is an older manual Kiron lens (remember I like weird and exotic glass) and the 28-200 is an AF nikkor that I scavenged off an N60 body..

Any word on that Tokina 11-16? That'd be a great lens to have...

Believe me.... I want it. But I might hold off until WDW in January before I buy it. See if there are any after christmas sales.

I agree with the others though, I would probably take the 50mm and the 28-200.
