A scare in the air over Chicago

A flight from Chicago O'Hare to LA has just made an emergency landing after the pilot called an emergency situation. Apparently a passenger with a history of mental illness tried getting into the cockpit of the plane. While this was happening the pilot declared an emergency and two F-16's took off imediately which caused two sonic booms that rocked houses in the Northwest suburbs. Other passengers were able to get the mentally ill passenger under control and the fighters escorted the airline back to O'Hare without further incident.

The people I've spoken too felt it shake their house from Carpentersville to Streamwood to Hanover Park. Anyone who was home at the time were out in the streets after they heard the sonic booms. The local news was reporting it. Nothing national or on web pages yet.

I thought they were going to start putting some kind of security oficers aboard planes now. If there had been this guy would have never got near the pit.

Fighter jets scrambled as scuffle erupts on Chicago-bound plane
Sonic boom rattles Chicago suburbs

A man with apparent mental health problems tried to enter the cockpit of a Chicago-bound airliner this afternoon, but was overpowered by other passengers, and the plane made an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport, authorities said.

The incident occurred aboard American Airlines Flight 1238 from Los Angeles to Chicago, according to the airline. A man, who was traveling with his father, allegedly tried to force his way into the locked cockpit, and the plane’s captain declared an emergency.

The man was subdued by other passengers on the plane, a Boeing 767 with 153 people aboard, American said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, a pair of fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the airliner, according to a CLTV report.

The fighters apparently broke the sound barrier in their haste, setting off a sonic boom that rattled buildings and residents across the suburbs.

Witnesses reported seeing the fighters accompany the American Airlines jet as it approached O’Hare for a landing. The airliner landed without further incident.

beauty, it seemed the only one who didn't get it was josh.

but that's ok, because josh and i help each other when either of us suffers a mental lapse, which is quite often.

but if you're implying my remark was somehow insolent or churlish, may i remind you that i actually live in chicago, where this incident took place.

there is a lot of nervousness here because chicago is home to the nation's tallest building. and we chicagoans try to deal with these sorts of things with humor.

i'll bear in mind that you demand only "a" material.

The outcome of this event really makes me proud to be an American. Hijacking or mental illness incident, the passengers proved to everybody they they are not gonna take from anybody!! :brick:

Not quite true, Dopey I just found your post inappropriate and thought I'd tell you nicely.
But if nicely offends, next time I'll tell you exactly how I feel :snore:

Well, I suffer from mental lapses every day. Guess that's why I got it. I even thought it was funny, so I'll give it 2 ha's.

You don't have to give me just "a" material though. I'll settle for b,c,d, hell I'll settle for even z material, as long as it makes me laugh. ;)

thanks, ariel. it's good to know that some people around here appreciate lame attempts at humor. i was beginning to wonder whether i was absent the day they passed out sticks to put up our butts. maybe beauty was the only one who did show up that day.

Well, I'd rather make a lame attempt at humor, than have none at all....I'm glad to know that at least I don't have a stick up my butt... ;)

I happen to like lame humor, anyway... :)
