A Question On 'Gay Days' At Disney

NOT meant to offend or upset anyone... just to educate myself.

I read that this upcoming weekend Disney will host the event. Can anyone tell me what it really is? Is it simply an honorary title or are there scheduled events or is it something in between?

(1) I have no particular opinion one way or the other on the subject. However I think its great to see that people from all walks of life enjoy WDW as much as I do.

(2) I don't think this is a WDW hosted event(I could be wrong so don't quote me). I think its sort of a guest hosted thing, kind of like when WDWMagic members get together and do stuff in the parks, but on a much larger scale.

It has been known to bring pretty large crowds. So I would only avoid the parks during that time to avoid the large crowds, and nothing more. However if the crowds were no different than any other weekend then I would have no problems visiting the parks during that time.

(1) I'm curious to get a sense of what some of your opinions are about the topic.

1. Have been to WDW during the 2003 event on Sunday. Sunday was suppoed to be the day that Epcot was the big meeting place. I honestly didn't notice a difference. Talking with people in line with me, there were a lot of people there of alternative lifestyle, but I only noticed one couple the whole day that looked anything like flamboyantly gay individuals.

I did not attent the Saturday Magic Kingdom day, which I've heard is much better attended, so I can not comment.

2. It's a planned meet event. Everyone participating is supposed to wear a red shirt. Different sub groups will have different meeting points through out the day at different attractions. This year has two competing events. One is scheduled for Saturday at MK, the other for Sunday at MK.

I'll be down there this year for an un-related engineering conference starting on Sunday. I'm planning on avoiding MK that day just because of the rumors of large crowds, hoping that the other parks will be a little lighter traffic.

Disney does not endorse the event. Any group can gather at WDW.

There are two different groups this year. gayday.com and gaydays.com. I will be down starting Thursday, I am going to try to avoid the groups, because of the crowds. If you are there then, I would advise the same. From people discussing previous years, it seems that the parks the groups are at are busy, while the others are pretty empty.

As for the opinions, this is not the board to have those types of discussions. Lets just discuss it as something occuring at WDW, and not something to have an opinion about.

My family was there in 2002. I'll admit that I was a little apprehensive at first, but honestly it was no big deal. I only saw a couple of questionable things. My kids never noticed a difference. Honestly in some ways it was better. Everyone was a lot friendlier that day. I don't think we saw one rude guest all day.

Crowds will be a little heavier at the park that the meeting is taking place other that that all I noticed was a lot of people in red shirts. I wouldn't alter any plans because of it.

Gay Days is not sponsored directly by Disney, it's sort of an outside meet-up kind of deal. Just sort of...more gay people and same-gender couples there at that time than on the average weekend. The crowds do tend to be larger around that time.

And with regards to #1, I really don't think that asking people to get into their opinions on something that is such a controversial topic (for some) is really a good idea (at least not on a board like this.) As you said, I'm sure you didn't mean to cause any sort of offense in advance, but we've all seen a few of these discussions get out of hand from time to time so it's best not to get into it. I'm sure you understand.

I read on another site that DJ Tracy Young (one of my personal favorites :p ) will be mixing with Chaka Khan--does anyone know the specifics of this: what park, time, if there is an additional cost? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Heading for the great escape.

crowded, vibrant, colourful, shock free, with fewer obnoxious spoiled brats to spoil the days, you may still see the odd tantrum though :dazzle:

I went to PI without thinking during the weekend last year (and come to think of it, it's been roughly that slong since i've had a date, wow, how time flies with work and school!)

The line for Mannequins stretched all the way from Adventurers Club to the door itself, and that was with them using the entire boardwalk/dock area as part of the club. The rest of PI was really crowded too.

Marketplace wasn't (I parked by Cirque because of how bad the parking lots were - and I couldn't figure out why at first, silly me!) and was going to get an ice cream over at Ghiradelli.
