Have you ever ridden Space Mountain and felt like your hands were going to hit the bars above you ?

Is it possible ? I have heard rumors that one lady claims to have touched it and was shocked. I doubt it, but is there any truth to the rumor ?

Are the close looking bars a special effect or am I imagining things ?

The darkness makes it look like those bars are a lot closer than they really are. However you aren't going to be touching them during your ride. They aren't nearly as close as they seem.

I know what you mean about it feeling like you could reach up and grab the bars but I don't think that's possible from a sitting position. I always even felt like they were too close to my head at times when I rode it. I think the dark makes the illusion that you're closer than you are. I rode it as a castmember with the lights on once and the bars are really farther away than they seem. If you really could touch the bars, the ride would be too unsafe to operate. There's a ride in Ohio called the beast and at one point you go through a tunnel at a turn and you could hit your hands so there's signs going up the lift hill warning you to not put your hands up. If you could touch the bars, Disney would at least have to warn you.

I think that sign would make more people try and reach. You know how people are....if you tell them not to do something they will do it.

I thought in SM already they didnt want any passengers to put their hands up. Ive seen only about 5 people putting their hands up in all the 5 to 6 years Ive been riding. I know one CM had told this guy to hold on instead.

I touched the top of the red tunnel at the end of SM this last weekend...and then I felt bad because I put fingerprints on it.

I think once people realize they can touch the top of the blue tunnel and once they see the bars seemingly inches from their head they think twice about having their hands up.

Same thing with Big Thunder Mountain. People always start out with their hands up but after a few of those corners where you get seemingly close to the things above you you see everybody's hands squeeze closer to the car.

I think the bars in SM are like the Haunted Mansion. The Imagineers placed everything at leas 4 feet away from the Doombuggies in HM so no one could touch anything. They probably placed the bars out of people's reach.

Yet again, it makes sense. Thanks.

Where did you work as a CM ? Space Mountain ?

No, I worked in merchandise at Splash mountain (in the photo shop). I was a cp and they had a cp party for all the cps in the magic kingdom and the highlight of the event was space mountain with the lights on.

While people may try to reach for the bars with a warning sign, if it were possible there would have to be one. Otherwise if an accident happened there could be a lawsuit for not being warned.

A friend of mine rode some coaster in texas that had a "no raiseing your hands" sign and touched a wire that ran about three feet above everybody's head just before the first drop and got a shock.

I think this is done to let people know that they are not kidding about not raiseing your hands.

hasnt this been discussed before?

hasnt this been discussed before when someone claimed that a person had his head or some appendage chopped off while on the ride. and finally it was decided that the only place one may lose a body part is the reloading of the train after the exit, which is why everyone must get out no matter what. i think thats what i remember :)

I know exactly the spot you're talking about. I cant' help but duck everytime, even though I know I don't need to. I've thought of trying to touch them before, but then (in my overactive imagination), my watch gets hung up on some rod and the car begins to drop and im stuck. Space Mountain will always scare me. :o
