Be gentle folks... this is my first attempt at something really suspenseful...

The Last Man

It was a dark and stormy night on October the 31st. The date was inconsequential though, as civilization had long since vanished. It was survived by a single man; the Last Man. He lived in a bungalow, on the third floor of an abandoned building in what was the British Isles. He spent his days sleeping, and killing the animals that roamed the streets for food. He had been alone for many decades. His mother died during his birth and his father died when he was eight. He had not seen another living human since then, because there where none.

Lightning flashed outside as the man slowly gnawed on the severed leg of a dog. A small fire was built in the center of the empty room, providing minimal light in the foreboding dark cavern. The sound of rain pounding the window and the rythmatic smacking of the Last Man's lips were the only sound prevalent in the barren apartment, with an occasional crackle from the fire. As the Last Man finished his meal, he slowly got up to his feet and tossed the remaining bone to the side. He smothered out the fire and total darkness filled the room. The rain continued as the man moved methodically to a pile of dirty cloths on the floor. He sat down, and a tear rolled down his cheek. Ancient memories of his father filled his head as he lay down, and began to sleep.

The Last Man dreamt of times spent with his father. Happy times when he was not alone. He pictured himself as a child chasing after his father. His father’s giant strides causing him move further away, and he playfully laughed.

Thump thump thump…

His father’s steps echoed on the floor, and the Last Man giggled in his dreams as he chased after him.

Thump thump thump…

The dream gave way to darkness as the man slowly awoke. He could see nothing, and an eerie silence filled the air, for the rain had stopped. The Last Man got up, and walked around the room in the darkness. He shuffled his feet along the worn carpet, trying to get the images of his father out of his head. After a while, feeling he had sufficiently pushed the thoughts out of his head, he returned to his cloth bed. He laid down and closed his eyes.

Thump thump thump…

He bolted up-right.

Thump thump thump…

“Where is that coming from?...” the Last Man thought to himself.

Thump thump thump…

He got up and moved around the room, searching for the source of the sound.

Thump thump thump…

He listened and followed.

Thump thump thump…

He listened and followed.

Thump thump thump…

He stopped. The noise was coming from behind his front door. It was not loud, and didn’t seem angry.

Thump thump thump…

He leaned against the door, pressing his ear against it.

Thump thump thump…

He jumped back, gasping. The noise was coming from something hitting his door.

Thump thump thump…

He quickly moved around the dark apartment, looking for anything he could use to defend himself.

Thump thump thump…

The sound continued.

Thump thump thump…

Finding nothing suitable, he grabbed the bone from which his dinner came earlier and approached the door.

Thump thump thump…

His heart raced and his lungs heaved with every frightened breath.

Thump thump thump…

He reached for the doorknob.

Thump thump thump…
He brought the bone back behind his head.

Thump thump thump…

He took a deep breath…

Thump thump thump…

…flung open the door screaming.

“AHHHH-“

He stopped short. He looked at the source of the terrible sound. With his eyes wide, he collapsed to the floor. His heart had stopped from fear.

The source of knocking paused. Its small form produced light from its hand and illuminated the body of the Last Man. Cautiously, the creature approached the dead man, focusing on his face. The light reflected dully in his life-less eyes. Weak and shy, the creature began to speak…

“Trick or Treat?...”
