A Disneylander heads back to the World - A Trip Report

After we booked our trip to WDW back in April, the day finally arrived and we headed back starting 11/30, returning 12/8. Below is my long winded trip report and my overall thoughts on some of the newer offerings i.e. Skyliner, Genie+, Harmonious & Enchantment. My last visit was May 2017 and our two daughters had not been back since December 2010. We stayed at PoP Century who's rooms had gone up in price over $100 per night in 11 years.

11/30 - Woke up bright and early at 4am for our 8am flight out of Santa Ana...or at least we thought 8am. Unfortunately, 7am rolls around and they tell us our pilot has called out 1 hour before the flight and we will be delayed until 11 AM! We would have missed our connection through Chicago and while there were no real earlier flights, we did get another flight at 11am that took us through Dallas. Of course, we get to Dallas and our flight to Orlando is delayed so instead of getting in at 6:48pm like we originally planned, we arrive closer to 10pm. Not an ideal start as we had plans to visit Disney Springs for dinner when we arrived. Side note, my 20 yr old daughter got a chicken Caeser salad at the TGI Friday's take out in Dallas...don't do that, she woke up in the middle of the night with food poisoning.

12/1 - Magic Kingdom Day. Plan was to be up and out the door for the 8:30am early entry but given daughter had been sick all night, I called an audible and we decided to sleep in and show up at the MK around noon. Now I did still wake prior to 7am to purchase Genie+ and book lightning lane for Jungle Cruise & Seven Dwarfs (extra fee). More thought on Genie+ at the end. Was able to ride Peoplemover (first ride as always), Carousel of Progress, Speedway, Mansion, Pirates, Enchanted Tiki Room, Philharmagic, Pooh, & Jungle Cruise before we left around 6:30pm. Decided we would see Enchantment on our second MK day. Wife and youngest daughter, who was a trooper all day but still not feeling well, headed back to hotel while oldest daughter and I took a boat to the Poly for a drink at Trader Sam's. She and I then headed to Disney Springs as she wanted to try Chicken Guy. Meh, very average chicken strips and really wouldn't recommend.

12/2 - Hollywood Studios. Our first experience with the Skyliner which overall, I loved. Woke up around 6:30am, bought Genie+ and following the advise of Tom Bricker/Disney Tourist Blog, booked Slinky Dog Dash (really fun family coaster). Arrived at 8:00 for early 8:30 entry and they actually let us in early so we immediately went to Mickey's Runaway Railway. I think people will enjoy this. It's not mind blowingly good but it's fun and different. Great family attraction. At 9am (2 hour mark), booked an additional Genie+ attraction and also decided we would go ahead and pay the upcharge to ride Rise of the Resistance. Loved it, only my second time experiencing it. I will say that their land feels more compact, mainly the different entry points we have, especially our much longer entry from Bear Country. Overall, we rode every attraction excluding Smugglers Run because nobody wanted to do it. FYI, best dinner we had all trip was at Mama Melrose's in DHS. Really fantastic, great quality italian. Pricey, yeah, but what isn't in WDW.

12/3 - Epcot Day. Arrived at park around 10am for 10:30am early entry. We did not do Genie+, again at the reco of Disney Tourist Blog. Upon opening, went to Frozen (girls had not experienced it as Maelstrom was still there last visit) and only had a 20 minute wait. From there, on to 3 Caballeros followed by Single Rider for Test Track. We literally waited 1 minute to ride TT. Off to Imagination & Living with the Land. Daughter was still not feeling well so she headed back to hotel. Headed back to World Showcase, had a couple drinks and lunch at Via Napoli. I was so looking forward to VN as it (was) my favorite pizza on earth. Ugh, not nearly as good as previous trips, so disappointing. I dare say that Naples at our Downtown Disney is far better now. Decided to take a monorail ride and head back to the Poly for a drink at Taumbu Lounge...love the Lapu Lapu out of a pineapple. Back to Epcot for a ride on Spaceship Earth (I really wish they would fix that ending, so boring). Wife was tired so oldest and I stayed around to ride the new Rat Ride (very meh, got me motion sick so I had to stop looking at screens). Would not bother with it again. Just missed the first showing of Impressions de France (have never seen it, only plays between 8:30pm and 9:45pm). Left before Harmonious as we planned to see on our last day.

12/4 - Our non-park day. Took family to Disney Springs for a bit of shopping and stayed only a couple hours. Tried to get in to Jock Lindsey's but it was a 90 minute wait so decided to head back to hotel and have drinks at the bar, spend an hour or so relaxing by the pool before our dinner at Trail's End (Fort Wilderness). Great meal but not nearly as good as the old buffet. I do hope they open that back up at some point. From there, took boat to MK and then another boat to the Poly and a final drink at Sam's. Took resort monorail to see the gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian and then back to hotel for the night.

12/5 - Animal Kingdom. Another early entry day, arrived around 8:00 for 8:30 entry and were on Expedition Everest by 8:35. No Genie+ purchased for AK. Headed to Pandora and rode Naavi River Journey (pretty but nothing special) before heading out on Safari. We were pretty much able to hit everything we wanted (shows and attractions) and oldest paid for lightning lane just for Flight of Passage (I can't ride it due to motion sickness). We also squeezed in a couple yummy drinks at the Dawa Bar. FYI, the holiday lighting show on the Tree of Life is beautiful. A real highlight for me.

12/6 - Magic Kingdom Day 2. Bought Genie+ and booked Peter Pan. Also paid extra for Seven Dwarfs again as everyone wanted one more guaranteed ride. Early entry and straight to Space Mountain, then to the Astro Orbiter (such a better experience up high like what we used to have at DL). Wife (now dealing with back spasms) and youngest headed back to hotel for an afternoon break with plan to meet back up around 6 pm so we could watch Enchantment at 8pm. Oldest and I stayed around and rode a few more rides and we grabbed a spot dead center on Main Street (between Casey's and Plaza Restaurant) for Enchantment. As soon as enchantment ended, we had about 35 minutes left before the park closed. Rode Peoplemover, Dumbo, Barnstormer and literally walked through the entrance to Small World at 9pm, our last ride at MK...perhaps my last ride at MK forever. Short wait for a bus, a quick couple drinks at the Pop hotel bar and back to bed to rest up for our last day.

12/7 - Epcot Day 2. No early entry, no Genie+. Decided to sleep in a bit to get a little extra rest for both our minds and bodies....we were pretty much all mentally done and exhausted at this point. Took a trip to the Wilderness Lodge as I had never been there and the plan was then to take boat to MK and then visit the contemporary via the resort monorail...which had unfortunately broken down for the day. We walked from MK to contemporary which did not help my wife's back and then a nice bus driver was kind enough to take us to the TTC so we could catch the monorail to Epcot. Spend the rest of the evening at Epcot getting in one more ride on SSE and Soarin. Visited the World Showcase Pavillions, had dinner and drinks and then found a spot for Harmonious. Thankfully the line looked long but didn't take long to get on the Skyliner back to our hotel. And with that, our trip was over. We were completely exhausted and quite honestly, I would have been fine sleeping all day vs going to Epcot but the cheapskate in me wasn't about to throw away that money.

As for the new stuff we experienced:

Genie+ - For MK and HS, we felt like we had to purchase and all the advice we had read was that both of these parks were pretty much a must. I don't think our in park experiences would have been as good had we not done so. Overall, we spent $60 (MK day 1) + $28 (MK day 1 7DMT) + $60 (HS) + $60 (RotR) + $60 (MK day 2) + $28 (MK day 2 7DMT) - $240 extra just to have fastpass experience. All things that were free of charge on every other trip we've had there. Yes, there is some convenience being able to book but we were able to do that with the previous app if I remember correctly, just had to do it well in advance vs day of.
Skyliner - Loved the skyliner. Staying at PoP, it's really the only way to travel to Epcot and DHS as they no longer have busses to those parks from any of the skyliner resort. No real issues per se, just the occasional slowdown as EVC or Wheelchair guests are loaded.
Enchantment - Beautiful fireworks show but really falls short of what a 50th celebration show should be. Truly a clip show vs stirring any emotion around the 50th anniversary. Remember...Dreams Come True did it perfect. This fell well short of that.
Ratatouille - Super Meh, a lot of buildup for little payout. Nobody had any desire to ride it again.
Harmonious - The surprise hit. We sat pretty much as close to center as possible given the stage is up for the festival of the holidays which would block that true center view. This is the one I was really most concerned with as I loved Illuminations. Man, I'm happy that my concerns were unfounded. This show is stunning and I while some may think it's another clip show, actually using native languages and sticking to films that are relatable to World Showcase i.e. not using Toy Story or Cars for example, works as a theme. And yes, the barges are an absolute eyesore during the day but what they do with them for this show is nothing short of amazing. I really, really enjoyed this show.

Other observations:
The ECV thing is an absolute plague on the resort. Disney does the best they can do with it but the amount of extra time/wait caused for transportation i.e. busses, boats, monorail, skyliner can be challenging at times. And that's not even taking into account the rudeness some of these drivers have or their inability to even maneuver one of them without crashing into something. Omnimover type attractions suffer tremendously as well as pretty much every one (SSE, Ariel, HM, Buzz) can't be experienced without multiple stops or slow downs during a single ride.
Giant top of the thigh tattoos area apparently all the rage for WDW visitors
Swearing loudly is a thing
WDW guests are far more rude and pushy in general..from what we experienced. The concept of cutting in front of you in lines is apparently and artform there.
WDW toilet paper (aka sandpaper) for 9 days will do a number on you :D

At the end of the day, despite some hiccups along the way, we did enjoy ourselves. That being said, I'm not sure I'll ever make a trip back there. The increase in cost with a reduced experience overall (pay more, get less) and just the inability to even relax make it far less attractive to me, especially as I get older. Bottom line, it's just not the same or as enjoyable as it was 11 years ago.

Thanks for the detailed report! I've looked into going back to WDW several times in the last couple of years and every time I have a hard time justifying the price. Disney isn't making that equation any better with Genie+, loss of airport transportation, etc. Glad you guys had fun though!

Not to derail, but since you brought it up.... My mom is disabled and uses an ECV outside all the time. When we went to WDW back in 2008 she rented one instead of bringing her own. She is an experienced ECV user and she crashed constantly! Apparently some of the rentals don't stop well and also accelerate in a jumpy fashion. It really sucked. Add a fleet of people that don't use them regularly and it is chaos. On the flip side, because of this "plague of ECV's", she also got a LOT of negative/snide comments from people at the busses and when getting on rides (including some rudeness from a couple of cast members.) That part was just terrible and really upset her. I know you didn't do that, but man, people can really suck sometimes.

Yeah, we never commented or gave anyone mean looks. I know it’s just a side effect of going to WDW, you’ll always have these in mass. And I would never advocate or suggest anyone shouldn’t be able to visit due to mobility issues. It just creates a very different experience than one might be used to at Disneyland.

Sounds like a good, albeit exhausting, trip!

My wife and I had a similar experience right before you, on our honeymoon.

Trip specs:
Timeframe: 11/17 - 11/24
Resort: Wyndham Bonnet Creek
Players: Me and my wife (early 30's)
Total park days: 4

11/17: LAX -> MCO
The trip didn't start out super great... our flight from LAX was delayed an hour, which didn't seem so bad at the time, but it meant our arrival at Orlando was now after midnight. I had rented us a car through Sixt, but when we got there, the rental car desk was closed. They had a sign up saying to visit their counter at the other terminal. Fine. We ran over there, only to find that it was also closed. We contemplated cancelling our reservation and getting another rental car somewhere else, but the only desks open had "trucks or minivans for $95 a day". NOPE. I had specifically booked us a BMW as a surprise for our honeymoon, and there was no way I was going to give that up for a minivan. In the end we took an Uber to our hotel and checked in around 2am. Mind you, this was after the clerk tells us that she has us booked until the 20th. No no no, we said. We booked until the 24th through AirBnB. The clerk told us we could "figure it out later", and we were pretty exhausted, so we just said OK and went to our room. At least that was in good shape.

11/18: EPCOT (mild drizzle throughout)
We woke up and took another Uber back to the airport to pick up our car. The morning clerk tried to tell us that, "we usually stay until 1am" and when we said no one was there, she goes "sometimes they leave at 12:30" (which we were also there by...) All in all, it was a horrible customer service experience, but I made sure we got that BMW, so whatever.

We finally made it to Epcot around 11:30 to start our day. It was my wife's first time ever at WDW so she just wanted to take everything in. I took her on SSE and all my other favorite attractions (that are still there), and we had a blast. We had also come right at the tail-end of the Food and Wine festival, so we got our lunches from the China and German stands. We did standby for Frozen when it was only 65 minutes, and it actually didn't take very long. Overall, I still prefer Maelstrom, but whatever. Had to stop at the Norwegian bakery after that (my wife's family is Norwegian) and she was floored that they had lefse. I got the School Bread which was very good. We did 3 Caballeros and Club Cool. Even though we had dinner reservations coming up, I wanted to try a sriracha-glazed donut fried chicken sandwich. It that was quite exceptional. We did some shopping to walk off the food, then had dinner at Coral Reef which was great (despite us being stuffed from earlier). Finally, we decided we'd watch their new nighttime show. Overall, I found it super "meh", but I'm glad we saw it at least once. Despite the previous day's arrival nightmare, it felt amazing being back and getting to show the wife everything for the first time. Even though the park is in rough shape, it still brought back all the great memories from my childhood and reminded me why I love it so much.

11/19: MAGIC KINGDOM (mild drizzle throughout with small downpour at night)
The next day was all Magic Kingdom and that felt a lot like being "home". We took the monorail to the park and went straight for Haunted Mansion (our favorite ride) and that was fun... until we stopped in the ballroom scene and the right broke down completely. We had to exit our Doom Buggies and walk all the way back out towards the entrance. They comped us a Lightning Lane pass good for any ride though, so that was nice (we ended up just using it for HM again later that night before dinner). Their Pirates sucks compared to ours, but it was really nice to get to ride Carousel of Progress, People Mover, and Country Bears again. Rode their version of Buzz Lightyear and man, is it horrible. The guns are mounted to the vehicle like Midway Mania and they use a thumb trigger instead of a traditional one. A big disappointment. We elected to skip Seven Dwarves since it was a long standby, but we had a good time walking through their Fantasyland. We rode Little Mermaid (which has a MUCH better queue), and made it to our reservations at Liberty Tree Tavern. One thing we really realized that is lacking in Disneyland is more true "experience" dining. Blue Bayou is probably the one restaurant that is truly comparable, but it just seems that WDW has them in spades. Liberty Tree was my wife's favorite meal of the whole trip. After that, we decided to try and get a spot for the fireworks, but found it difficult since the people in front of us either had kids on their shoulders, or their iPhones held up right in our field of view. Oh, and then it started raining. The show was good, but then it was a mass exodus to leave. In the rain. We ducked into the shops to try and let the herd thin out, but it didn't really seem to make much of a difference. We decided to take the ferry back to the parking lot, and enjoyed that quite a bit. Mercifully the rain had let up by that point, so it was a peaceful trip.

11/20: DAY OFF (rainy morning, then clear)
Next day was a much needed day off, and there was a steady storm for a good portion of the morning. Still, we braved the elements and left property for breakfast. I had heard of a place called First Watch that had some good looking food, so we got take out and brought it back to our room to eat and relax. The rain let up shortly after mid-day, so we hit up Disney Springs which was crazy packed, but pretty fun. I had wanted to try Gideon's Bakehouse so I entered us in the "virtual queue" which wound up being over 4 1/2 hours long. That might seem ridiculous just for some cookies, but I'm telling you, it was SO worth it. Half-pound behemoth cookies that were just... mmm *chef's kiss*... We got 5 total and ate them throughout the rest of our trip, and even took some leftovers home.

11/21: ANIMAL KINGDOM -> EPCOT -> HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS -> EPCOT (drizzle throughout)
We started the next day at Animal Kingdom. It really feels like a half-day park to me. We headed in and went straight to Na'vi River Journey. I hate to say, but the ride was NOT worth it. The Shaman AA was broken, so there was just a video screen up which was such a letdown, especially since we had waited over an hour in line. We then did the Safari which we enjoyed quite a bit. I had ridden EE and Dinosaur on a previous visit in 2012, and since my wife didn't really seem interested in them, we park-hopped to Epcot for lunch at The Land and more SSE riding. I kept wanting us to go see the Canada film, but it was never showing. Our dinner reservations that night were for Prime Time Diner, so we walked over towards the Boardwalk and took the Friendship Boats to Hollywood Studios. After walking around a little bit, we hopped in line for Runaway Railway. It certainly isn't mind-blowing, but I think it'll be a huge hit for DL and ToonTown. We kept walking until we passed the Sci-Fi Dine In, which is honestly one of my favorite restaurants on property. We had tried getting reservations, but they had been booked solid for months. However, on a whim, I thought, let's just check and see what they say. Fully expecting to be rejected, I was absolutely floored when the hostess lowered her voice a bit and said, "Party of 2? Oh, I can get you guys in in 5 minutes". So yeah. We went back to Prime Time to cancel our reservation, then went back to Sci-Fi for what was my personal favorite meal of the trip. Since our car was parked at Epcot, we had to take the Friendship Boat back there, rode SSE one more time, then back to our room.

11/22: HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS -> EPCOT (rain, then clear)
Our last day in the parks, and we headed back to Hollywood Studios. But it was raining. Which we had encountered already, but for some reason, it just felt like a bigger downer. We made it to MuppetVision 3D and then, since we had ridden MMRR the previous night, decided there wasn't anything else there we had to do that we couldn't do in CA. We would have done standby for Rise, but right as we were heading over, it broke down. So we left and stopped at the Grand Floridian Resort to see their huge gingerbread house. Then we went back to Epcot and did almost all the rides again (minus Nemo). Living With the Land has always been another personal favorite of mine and I'm glad that its still mostly intact, but I miss that song! Our dinner reservation that night was for the Biergarten which was a blast with the live band playing. We managed to get the last showing. A few more spins on SSE, and that was that!

11/23: DAY OFF (sunny)
We had one more day off and of course it was the only day with NO rain! Since I had grown up in the area, I wanted to drive around town and stop by my old house and elementary school. I barely recognized it anymore, but it was emotional all the same. Stopped for some lunch at WaWa and then it was back to Disney Springs to look for a suitable Christmas tree ornament, but they didn't have a single "honeymoon" related one! Oh well. Took an evening walk around our resort area and went back to pack.

11/24: MCO -> LAX
We figured we would need to be at the airport super early since it was the day before Thanksgiving, but found it almost empty! We wound up being almost 2 hours early for our flight! Then we got home... and couldn't find our car at LAX for almost 45 minutes. Long story short, Parking lot 2A has a parking section 3D on level 3 when you walk off the elevator (logical), BUT there is also a section of 3D that you get to on level 2. There was a guy working in the structure who told us, "if you know your license number, we'll find your car no problem". So we gave him the number and he goes, "oh, yeah, they can't find your car." We were starting to panic, and even went as far as to call Airport police just to see if it had been impounded for some reason. When they said no, we were ready to assume it was stolen, but decided to look just one more time. Never again...

FINAL THOUGHTS:
-Despite the travel/airport/reservation/car issues at the bookends of our trip, the actual bulk of the trip was excellent. The 50th decorations were nice, albeit inconsequential to our experience. The overall busy-ness was expected, though probably not helped by the fact that the first half of our trip was at the same time as the Destination D event.

-In the 4 days we had at the parks, we were able to ride everything we wanted to at least one time, with the exception of maybe Seven Dwarves, but yeah. Not too shabby. We didn’t purchase Genie+, nor did we intend to us any LL’s and wound up getting one by accident. Having said that, I could see why it might be alluring to a family on vacation, but like OP said, it can be pricey.

-I know everyone here knows the effects a "Disney day" takes on the feet and legs, but it must be said, a WDW vacation is not for the faint of heart. I think my wife calculated we walked close to 50 miles total on our trip, often averaging 20,000+ steps a day. Our room had a jacuzzi tub and we basically used it every night purely just to recover our bodies. Speaking of the resort though, it was wonderful. "On property" but not a technical WDW resort, so we didn't have to pay a daily resort fee. The "issue" we had with our reservation had to do with the resort trying to "keep reservations open" for the owners near Thanksgiving... or something. Worst case scenario, we would have just had to change rooms mid-way through our stay, but our host was excellent and managed to keep us in our room for the duration of our trip. The room also had a washer/dryer inside which was a huge blessing with all the rain we encountered.

We've only been back a few weeks, but we miss it already.
