Trip Report Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A Jedi craves not these things…

IMG_2852.jpeg

I told you in the last one I had to start packing… No time for a pre-TR. We’re leaving for the hotel at the airport today.

Buckle up buttercups. Punch it, Chewie!

Pretrip Musings

So you might be noticing a trend here that we tend to take a January trip. Winter in Michigan sucks. It’s really nice to go somewhere where we can see sunshine and walk outside with your nose hair freezing.

I don’t know what it says about my life but I am looking forward to spending time at The Most Stimulating Place on Earth (™️ @k8einwdw ) to relax and slow down.

2025 was the 5th unprecedented year in a row at work.

(Really hoping for some precedented stuff in 2026…)

My boss was on maternity leave for 12 weeks and I covered for her. A bit stressful but glad to do it.

Then a few months after she got back she “got an opportunity” to do an entire other job in addition to her regular job. Most days she’s at another site. So I’ve been my own boss for 8 of the last 12 months. (Not as fun as being your own grandpa)

During that time we’ve had two Grey’s Anatomy level hospital-wide situations, and a big regulatory survey, with another impending.

The best way I can sum up my current role is being the mom of the department. I just get brought problems and put out fires all day long and then try to sneak in my regular work in between.

I try my best to maintain some semblance of a work life balance but inevitably when it’s already an hour after when I should have left someone finds me and exclaims “Oh thank goodness you’re still here!!”

This is all to say that I’ve really really been looking forward to this trip.

When I caught a cold at 9 days out from the trip I didn’t stress out.

When lil BES caught the same cold at 5 days out I started to get nervous.

Sounds like the universe is saying you need a bonus Disney day 🙃

But in all seriousness, safe travels! I hope everything clears up soon so you can get back home.

It’s weird because Michigan didn’t get anything unusual in that big storm that hit elsewhere. The front desk CM heard a lot of flights are being cancelled due to flight crew being stuck in other cities.

Going to make the most of our bonus day. All arrangements are go.

Got back home yesterday (Thursday). Was originally supposed to come home Tuesday so we are definitely going to end this with some adventure.

But let’s start back at the beginning…

Pretrip Musings Continued:

Lil BES was feeling crummy on Thursday. Grumpy. Wouldn’t eat. Low grade fever. We got a rough snow so school was cancelled but even if it wasn’t she clearly wasn’t going.

She doesn’t have preschool on Fridays so another day to rest and recover. I had a lot stuff to finish at work so ended up working about 12 hours and leaving at 6:30pm. I still wasn’t feeling 100% either so we went to bed early.

Saturday, we had a lot stuff planned:
  • Packing and laundry.
  • DH was going to meet with a friend.
  • I was going to get a pedicure.
  • Lil BES was going to spend some time with my parents.
  • Then we were going to hang out with the families of two of lil BES’s best friends (all our three families mesh really well, which is a parenting win!)
I was finally feeling better but lil BES wasn’t so our Saturday did not go as planned. I did get my pedicure, despite a sick and clingy lil BES declaring that she could paint my toenails instead so I wouldn't have to leave her.

We did do some laundry and packing. Lil BES also insisted we make Kodiak power muffins (because that’s what we did before our last flight in December. So now we have to do it for all of eternity… They do make a clutch breakfast for an early flight though. )

Lil BES wanted me to read to her on the couch. I did and this happened:

It was only 6:30pm so early for her to zonk out. I let her sleep on me for a while and then managed to extricate myself.

DH attempted to carry her up to her bed. Lil BES did not want that. We let her continue to nap on the couch for a while but eventually got her upstairs to bed.

I felt we were in a good spot trip preparation-wise but still worried about lil BES. It took me a full week to feel better. Lil BES was only on day 4…

Oh man, I made this mistake with my youngest niece once. She wasn't ill, but having a bad emotional day, so I let her snuggle on me, while I read her favorite story. Less than halfway through, this kid managed to cling to me with the strength of a vice grip; one arm around my neck, one arm basically pinning my left arm to my side, one leg squeezing the bejesus out of my waist, and honestly, I don't even know where her other leg ended up. Trying to get that kid off of me once I had to pee was like trying to figure out how to diffuse a bomb.

Sunday January 18th- Day 0

I was up at 5am. Thanks to Cherry Carrots. I was already feeling guilty about leaving her so I didn’t mind the early feeding and snuggles.

Lil BES was up at 7. Got some morning snuggles with her too. She was in a good mood. She still had a slight temp (not high enough to be a fever) but was looking and acting normal. Anytime I inquired how she was feeling she wanted to know if we were still going on vacation.

The goals for today:
  • Finish packing
  • Drop off the dog
  • Have dinner at IKEA
  • Go to hotel at DTW
When I initially booked flights for this trip my Disney brain thought a 7am departure was reasonable. Eventually it occurred to me I’d have to make my travel buddies leave the house at 4:30am at the latest, earlier if there was snow.

I ended up getting a Black Friday deal for the hotel inside DTW. For about $200 more than we would have to pay to park in the airport garage, we would have valet parking, more sleep and less worries about weather.

Looking at the forecast for overnight, it seems we made a good call.

My brother would be coming over daily to feed Cherry her wet food and play with her. Lil BES helped me get out all of the cat food and treats to make it easier for him.

I also packed up Maeby’s stuff. She would be going to my parents’ house. For all of the years we’ve had her, she still gets really excited when she realizes her stuff is being packed because it means a vacay at Grandma’s house.

Because I know she loves it there, I don’t feel too guilty about leaving her but guilty enough to give her an extra treat as I packed up.

Maeby ran off with the treat but instead of eating it, she “packed” it. 😍

Both pets while we packed:

Working on packing the humans was a little more challenging. Lil BES had big feelings about what Magic Band she would use.

At one point she shut herself in a closet.

“I can’t decide. I want them both!”

“Ok. You can have both.”

“Noooo!!! Don’t say that.”

Eventually we got all packed up and dropped off the dog. Next stop- IKEA.
