Our trip started out badly. Sunday morning, April 27 we flew into MCO, they served a ricotta omelet on the plane that gave me an upset stomach. We checked into the Yacht Club where DS and I always wanted to stay and walked up to EPCOT. We explored the World showcase and had dinner at the Biergarten which I did not enjoy due to the effects of the omelet. Luckily, the resort had Tums and I felt better after that.
Monday, we hit Hollywood Studios and Lightning Laned everything we wanted to see. On Smugglers Run I managed to bang my left elbow which left a bruise the size of a turkey egg. We went back to the resort in the afternoon where I had a medical emergency.
Let me begin by saying I love dogs and cats. Growing up I had a German Sheppard and a big black cat with green eyes. We lived in a wooded area of town and both animals were abandoned in our neighborhood. We adopted both and they slept on my bed for years. Later in life I visited a friend, played with his black Lab, and had to visit the ER where they told me I had developed an extremely dangerous allergy to animals.
The Yacht club is pet friendly but my AAA travel agent assured me that the pet areas were separate. Well, evidently someone with a dog sat in an upholstered chair in the lobby before me because I started swelling up, eyes watering and grasping for air. DS got the EpiPen, I showered and changed clothes and went to the front desk. I explained the situation to an incredibly nice and helpful young lady who first asked if I needed medical attention. She then helped me to transfer, for an upcharge, to the Contemporary resort. We got a room with a Magic Kingdom view and things got better after that. We enjoyed every park and DS and I had a wonderful time. We agreed that the Magic Kingdom resorts are “our speed.” We already agreed that next trip we want to re-visit the Wilderness Lodge.
The parks were busy but not overly so. There were many international visitors, school groups and Japanese honeymooners.
The Haunted Mansion stopped, for about 15 minutes the two times I rode it and at the same location where the marble busts were singing, not sure what was going on there.
On the carousel of progress, we didn’t rotate after the first segment and sat through the segment twice. I’m not sure if it was a malfunction or someone asleep at the switch.
We had great meals; Home Comin and Le Cellier stood out. We also enjoyed two-character meals at Chef Mickey’s and The Crystal Palace. Two grown men having their picture taken with Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh.
At Home comin I had the fried chicken and donuts which I couldn’t finish. DS ate the ever-glazed donuts and raved about them. We went to the nearby shop and purchased a couple for breakfast. Ther next morning I ate about half and stopped fearing hyperglycemia.
At Chef Mickey’s a little girl about seven wanted nothing to do with Mickey, he pleaded on bended knee. She loved Goofy and Donald, however. A young Japanese woman wanted to get her picture taken with Mickey. He arrived at her table just as she took a bite of food. She was gesturing to Mickey to please stay until she stopped chewing, pointing to her mouth and waving her hands.
The only meal we did not enjoy was the Brown Derby which was a disappointment as last October we enjoyed dining there and made it a “must return.” We each had a Cobb salad which is hard to mess up but they managed to do it as the salads were dripping in dressing. My DS ordered a beer and the waiter poured it like we was pouring water. DS and I looked at each other as if to say, “how does a waiter not know how to pour a beer?”
I wore my Vietnam Veteran hat and so many people thanked me for my service and/or said, “welcome home.” Several times as I went to purchase a drink, the vendor looked at me and said, “you’re all set” and would not accept my money. That is something that never happens back home.
The last day of our trip we were not leaving for the airport until 5pm. I had told the AAA travel agent I wanted park tickets for every day including the last. He said that everything was all set. On our last day we attempted to enter the Magic Kingdom and our magic bands would not work. We went to guest relations and of course we didn’t have the tickets for the last day. Another incredibly nice young lady gave us park tickets on Mickey. While waiting I was approached to participate in the afternoon retreat, Unfortunately I couldn’t as we were leaving before it occurred.
The negatives were the usual. First, people walking into me while looking at their phones. A few times I asked them if I should use my invisibility for good or evil.
ECVs and strollers should be required to have rear-view mirrors. People using them just seem to stop without thinking that someone is behind them.
I saw a couple of what I consider inappropriate tee shirts; I am an old boomer so my sense of propriety may be different, but here goes.
A mother pushing her child in a stroller had a tee shirt proclaiming “Don’t ask me SH*T.
A man with a tee shirt from the movie Space Balls with “Dark Helmet” stating “I’m surrounded by A*^HOLES.”
Other than those I saw so many clever matching family tee shirts.
A couple of observations, Figment really needs an update or be put out of its misery. EPCOT itself needs some TLC as well.
Finally, I am still amazed at the strength and elasticity of spandex.
The trip home also ended on a sour note. Our plane was delayed as the pilots were late arriving from wherever they were coming from. We finally got home around 1:30am
