Trip Report The Spontaneous Spring Break Trip! - March 2025

Hello everyone! Welcome to my first ever *official* trip report! Some of you may have followed my postings as I've done live trip updates in another thread, but this is my first time actually posting here.

For those of you who don't know me (I don't get outside of the Chit Chat forum too much anymore), I'm PUSH! I'm a teacher from Wisconsin.

When: March 22-March 26, 2025
Who: My parents and me
Where: Port Orleans Riverside (our go-to resort)
Why: My mom and I are both teachers in different districts. This is the first time our spring breaks have lined up, so we made the decision to go two weeks before our arrival.

Also, a little more info before I begin... we will be back down in June, so this was just a quick trip to get away. We weren't trying to accomplish everything. It wasn't the "marathon" that our normal trips are.

Sit back, keep your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the thread, and enjoy reliving my trip with me!

Travel Day

I've been to WDW 20+ times in my life, and we've always driven, except for one trip when I was in 6th grade. This time, with it being a short trip, we flew direct to Orlando out of Madison. My mom is pretty picky with flights, so we got the Ascent seats on Breeze Airlines. The Ascent seats are essentially premium economy/their version of first class (though they aren't what you picture when you think first class). But overall, they were nice seats.

This is a picture flying over Madison. For those who have never been to Madison, it's a beautiful city, with the downtown and the University located on a isthmus between two lakes.

20250322_171944.jpg

We got complimentary drinks and snacks included with the Ascent seats, so I started with the margarita and Gardetto's. I haven't had Gardetto's in a long time, and I forgot how good they are. The rye chips are my favorite. A little while later the flight attendant came back around to ask if we wanted anything else, so I got a vodka cranberry. I figured, if it's included, might as well get my money's worth. We also had the very front row, so we had extra legroom on top of the extra legroom. We also got two windows to ourselves. The few times I've flown before, I've only done standard economy, so I may have spoiled myself for future flights. As a 6'3 male, the extra legroom is well worth it.

20250322_181841.jpg

It started to get dark, so we were able to see the sunset out the window. It's also fun to see all the city lights down below. As we were approaching MCO, we got to see Happily Ever After from the plane. I also was able to spot Epcot, and the torches were lit for Luminous.

Once we landed, we took Mears Connect to Riverside. I wouldn't do that again... we had to wait a little while for other guests to arrive. Then once everyone was there, we had to drive to another terminal to pick a single passenger up, who I believe missed his bus or went to the wrong pickup. It seemed like we weren't supposed to get him originally. Then, we stopped at three other resorts before going to Riverside. It didn't help that we were also rushing to get to the resort before 11, so we could get something to eat before they closed. Otherwise we'd be starving by morning. Next time I'd do an Uber/Lyft. Mears would be different if it was complimentary like in the past.

We got to our resort around 10:45pm and made it in time for food. I ended up just getting chicken strips and splitting it with my mom. They were very good, as Disney chicken strips usually are. You'll come to learn, we aren't super adventurous or fancy diners.

Then we checked in and had some issues with the room. We got put in a second floor room in the Alligator Bayou section, but had requested a different building with an elevator because my mom has knee problems and would be having an ECV with her. The CM said there was no other option, as they were fully booked. I know she probably couldn't do anything, but she didn't seem to have any empathy. Didn't apologize once. When we asked what to do with the ECV, she just shrugged and pretty much wasn't going to help us figure it out. I had to do the problem solving and ask if we could leave it at bell services until the next morning, and then see if we could get a room with an elevator the next day. And that ended up being what happened. But the CM was not helpful at all. It's the first time in all of our years going to POR that we didn't have good service at check in. However, ultimately it all worked out, but it was an inconvenience the next morning, as we had to get up earlier than we wanted to in order to pick it up/drop off all our bags before going to a park. Again, I know she wasn't lying, but her attitude was disappointing. And I'm not one to normally complain about service... I worked in retail for a few years during college, and I try to be extra kind to people would work in the service industry... as you'll hear later in the trip.

But finally, we got to our room and pretty much went right to sleep.

Up next... Day 1!

Day 1, Part 1 - Animal Kingdom

Like I said, we ended up waking up earlier than we wanted to in order to figure out the mishap from the night before. But after all that was sorted out, we went to the bus stop to head to our first park... Animal Kingdom! Since we normally drive, we always have our car with us. We always drive to the parks, so using the buses consistently is pretty new for us. We've done it here and there, but not for an entire trip. As you'll hear throughout the report... we are NOT bus people. We totally missed having our car down there. But I'll get more into that later.

I believe this is the first time we have done AK as our first park of the trip. It was also very cold this morning. It was in the low 50s and breezy. A total change from what we're used to on our June trips, which is when we normally go down. Even when we used to go down in March several years ago, I don't think we've ever had it that chilly before. And we're Wisconsinites... we can handle the cold!

20250323_072202.jpg

My dad and I went to rope drop Na'vi River Journey first. My mom doesn't care for the ride, so she headed back to meet us at our next ride, Kilimanjaro Safaris. My dad and I walked right on Na'vi. This ride was always underwhelming for me the first few times, but I've grown to enjoy it for what it is. It's a mid-tier attraction, nothing more, nothing less. The music is starting to become more nostalgic, and I enjoy the animatronic at the end.

20250323_072841.jpg

After Na'vi, we took the path back to the Safari. Once we got back there, we learned that the ride didn't open until 8:15, even though the park opening was 8:00 for normal guests and 7:30 for resort guests. So we had to wait a little while, but once we got on, the animals were pretty active. The only animal we didn't really see were the giraffes, which are my mom's favorites. We saw a tiny glimpse of one through the trees, but the rest must not have been out. In total, I think we saw 22 different species of animals. A lot of them were very close to the truck.

After the Safari, my dad and I hiked over to Everest. When we started the walk, it was a 15 minute wait. By the time we got over, it was up to 35. The spring break crowds were in full effect. We decided to do single rider. I always love Everest. I feel like it's a forgotten ride, but it's one of the best. I think it's my favorite at AK.

20250323_090418.jpg

After Everest, we walked over to Dinosaur. It was a little weird with Chester and Hester torn down, but I'm also happy we're getting the Tropical Americas. Although, I think the dinosaur theme is great, but it was done totally wrong. Dinosaur is a good ride when the effects are working properly. Unfortunately, they never kept up with the proper maintenance. But I'll be sad that they couldn't keep some type of dinosaur theme in the park... seems like an easy theme to bring people to the parks. Again, if done right.

Anywho... after Dinosaur, we were hungry. We hadn't eaten anything to that point, and it was around 10:15. However, Animal Kingdom is awful in terms of quick service breakfast options. So we started walking to see what we could find, but didn't find much. We ended up just heading back to Pandora for our Flight of Passage lightning lane (yes, we splurged to save time on our short trip). This is always a fun ride. I wish I could experience it for the first time again. Also, Pandora is just a beautiful land to walk around.

20250323_095918.jpg

20250323_103322.jpg

20250323_100553.jpg

After Flight of Passage, we were getting really hungry, and at that time the quick services were starting to open for lunch. It was about 10:45. We went to the closest one to us, which was Pizzafari. Big thumbs down. 👎 I know, I know... this has never been a good restaurant. But it was worse than I had expected. I got the chicken parmesan. It tasted like a Lean Cuisine microwaved meal. Even the chicken was bad. I won't be going here again.

After our "brunch", we did some shopping at the main stores. This is where I first saw a gray button-down shirt I really liked, but they didn't have it in my size.. It started my hunt in every store I went to for the next 24 hours.

On our way out of the shops, we saw Kevin. We then took the little hidden bridge on your way out, which we had never seen before. It's crazy that after 23 years of going to the parks (my first trip was October 2002), and we still find things we didn't know existed.

On the bus ride back to the resort, we kept checking to see if our new room was done. No luck. At least right until we got to the bus stop. Then it showed us the room number. I was able to use my phone to scan the Magic Bands to give us access to the room. I never knew you could do that, as a CM normally does it for us.

So we got our luggage from bell services and went to our room. It was a river view room (which is was we originally booked, because it was all that way available). Right next to the bridge to Ol' Man Island (where the main pool is, and it leads to the main building). The room was nice, as usual, but they are starting full refurbs of the rooms next month. I'm interested to see what they will look like.

We got unpacked and sat for a little bit before heading to our next park.

Up next... Day 1, Part 2, where we visit Epcot!

A few random pictures that I couldn't fit in the last post. One thing to know about me... I don't take pictures ever in my real life. But when I go to Disney, I love it. Thank you! Maybe it's all credit to my semester-long photography class back in high school. 😂

The hidden bridge is right as you're leaving Discovery Island, across the bridge heading to the Oasis. There's a little cave with benches, and there's an exit with a bridge. Maybe it's not hidden, and maybe I'm the only person on these forums who never knew about it. Now that I'm looking at an AK map, it looks like there are a lot of paths there that I haven't explored.

Just subtle enough, but yet just Disney enough…!!! :)

I said to my mom on the way down, "Too bad we weren't flying a little later, or we might be able to see the fireworks!" Well, I guess I didn't realize they started at 8:30 instead of 9:00. It was really neat to see them from the sky! My previous highest viewing point was the roof of the Contemporary... I beat that by a bit!

This brings back a memory…
When we flew in the night of our first family WDW trip back in July of ‘01, we saw the MK fireworks from the plane, and it was so cool…!!! :)
No pics though, as our regular camera and video camera were in the overhead bin luggage, and we had no cell phones back then…!!!!! :hilarious:

Day 1, Part 2 - Epcot

Once we got back from AK, we picked up our luggage from bell services and made our way to our new room. It was a mansion room, which is our go-to at Riverside. We always stay in building 85, Magnolia Terrace. This time we had a river view room, as I shared in the last part. The view was great. We had the river right outside our room, and we could also see directly across the river to the main pool on Ol' Man Island. While the view was great, the room was in a very busy location, so it was much noisier than normal. We could hear the pool activities across the river, people were constantly walking past our room, and at night we could hear the horses pulling the carriages. It wasn't a major issue, but definitely less private than other locations! Had there been Woods View rooms available, we would have booked that instead.

20250328_094443.jpg

20250323_125449.jpg

After we unpacked, we sat in our room for a little bit to relax. However, we didn't have lots of time, as we had booked an individual lightning lane for Guardians for 2pm. So we headed on over to the East Depot to wait for a bus. Upon arrival to Epcot, there were some pretty decent lines waiting to get in. Again... the spring break crowds were in full effect. But we went off to the side, where the line was a bit shorter and didn't have a very long wait.

Once we got in, we were greeted by the Moana topiaries for the Flower and Garden Festival. Back when I was in high school, we used to come over spring break every year. So we've been to the Flower and Garden Festival several times. Two years ago they extended it throughout most of June, so that's the last time we attended. However, before that, it had been years. I love seeing all the flowers and topiaries. It's very nostalgic for me.

20250323_140849.jpg

For those that don't know me well, I'm also a huge Epcot fan. It's my favorite park, and the music is amazing. I miss the Innoventions area loop but the new music is fantastic as well.

20250323_141040.jpg

Before heading to Guardians, we decided to get in line for Spaceship Earth. It was a 15 minute wait, but it probably was a little longer than that. I know people have issues with the narration on this ride, but it's very nostalgic for me. I really enjoy the ride, and it's probably my personal favorite at Epcot. And it's so photogenic. I have so many pictures of SSE on my phone, it's ridiculous.

20250323_141548.jpg

Once we got of SSE, my dad and I went over to Guardians to use our lightning lane. We've only ever done the virtual queue for this ride in the past. And while the lightning lane got us past most of the line, we still had to wait for the holding rooms and preshows. I enjoyed the preshows the first couple times, but I've seen them so many times I'd be okay skipping them now. We got Everybody Want to Rule the World. I believe I've gotten every song, except for September. That's what I've been wanting the past several rides. My very first song was One Way or Another, and it fits the ride so well.

20250323_152915.jpg

After Guardians, we looked at a few topiaries, then stopped in Club Cool. My favorite is the Korean apple drink. If my drink is fruity, I prefer it to be flat instead of carbonated, so I love that drink. At the old Club Cool, I loved the South African Bilbo. I wish they still had it.

20250323_153008.jpg

20250323_153043.jpg

After Club Cool, we met back up with my mom and looked around at some of the flower in Future World. I know it's not called Future World anymore, but the new names of lands are not great. I couldn't tell you any of them. We also did some shopping at the Creations Shop. I like the shop, but I miss Mouse Gear. It was my favorite shop at Disney.

While in Creations, I saw the shirt from AK, but once again, they didn't have my size. The hunt continues.

Day 1, Part 2 - Epcot (Continued)

We then made our way back to World Showcase to begin our tour of the pavilions. We weren't planning on spending tons of time exploring, since we only had half a day in Epcot. Instead, we would just see what we could get done and stop for some drinks and food along the way.

20250323_161410.jpg

We like to start in Mexico and work our way around. With Ratatouille, that sometimes doesn't become the case anymore, and it feels weird. For us, Mexico is the "right" way to start. And since we weren't doing Ratatouille this time, we started in Mexico. Our first stop... frozen margaritas. This is somewhat of a tradition of ours. I went for the Fiesta, which is a mix of the three flavors: strawberry, mango, and lime. Sometimes I'll just go for the strawberry. That's what my dad got. My mom doesn't drink much alcohol, so we just stopped for a Diet Coke later on.

20250323_161850.jpg

Snapchat-1152067194.jpg

We then continued on our way, passing by Norway and China.

20250323_163417.jpg

We stopped at Germany to get the toasted pretzel bread at the Flower and Garden food booth. The line was kind of long, but it was worth it. My dad also got the potato pancakes with ham and onion.

We've had the pretzel bread before a couple years ago, and it was a favorite of ours. So I had to make sure to get it again. And once again, it lived up to the hype. What's not to like about pretzel bread, ham, and cheese? The potato pancakes were also good, but I only had a bite.

20250323_165329.jpg

20250323_165337.jpg

I also had to get the pretzel bread pudding. I first had this on my last trip, and it was absolutely delicious, so I had to get it again. It's a regular item you can get year-round, so if you've never had it, I highly recommend trying it! The vanilla sauce is so good.

20250323_170545.jpg

Now that we had eaten half of the food in Germany, we continued on.

20250323_172731.jpg

We didn't really stop again until France. I had heard a lot of good things about the La Vie En Rose drink at the festival booth, and I've been meaning to try it. It was good, but I don't feel like it was worth $15. I'm glad I tried it, but I wouldn't get it again. Not for that price.

20250323_174150.jpg

Then we headed across the bridge, and I stopped at World Traveler's to see if my shirt was there. Nope. It wasn't. We then continued onto the UK. My dad had always wanted to try the fish and chips, but it's always so hot when we normally go in June, that he never wants to have fried fish in the heat. So since it was a better temperature, he stopped for some. I had a little bit, and it was delicious! The chips were great and salted perfectly. I'd definitely get them again!

The last item I wanted to try was the S'mores bar at the new Beach Grub booth. I had heard good things about it. I debated getting the corn on the cob, too, but I was getting really full. The bar was good, but not great. It was much saltier than I would have liked. I was hoping for more sweet. Again, glad I tried it, but I probably wouldn't get it again.

20250323_182511.jpg

After the tour of food, we decided to go ride Figment since it was a walk-on. We passed by the Lion King topiary on our way. The sun was providing great lighting for some photos of the Imagination pavilion.

Here's one more picture of the Imagination pavilion that I couldn't fit in the last post.

20250323_183550.jpg

After Figment, we debated doing Nemo. However, we opted to go into The Land to ride Soarin', followed by Living with the Land. We got to Soarin, walked in the lined, and noticed it was going to be a decent wait. So we decided to go ride Living with the Land first, so the Soarin line would hopefully die down afterwards. Living with the Land is one of my favorite rides. The little chime as the ride first starts is one of my favorite sounds. The narration is also music to my ears. And at dusk, it's beautiful in the greenhouses. A totally different vibe than during the day... quite relaxing.

20250323_191400.jpg

20250323_191440.jpg

Once we got off, my plan had worked. Soarin's line was about a third of the length from before. This was the first time we had ridden with the new scenes. Having a straight Eiffel Tower was great. However, I still much prefer Soarin' Over California. I have three complaints with Around the World. First, I feel like you're flying "up" more often than not. In the California version, I felt like you were tilted down, and it felt like you were flying faster. Second, the "jump scares" are pretty cheesy transitions. Third, I wish they didn't use any CGI. Make it more realistic. But I still enjoy the ride, it's just not the "must do" like the original version was.

20250323_185927.jpg

20250323_195008.jpg

After Soarin', we left The Land and did a quick walkthrough of Moana. We've only done this once before, and it was during the day. So now that it was dark, we wanted to see what it looked like. It's much better at night. It's still not a must do, but it's a decent little area to explore. I'm not sure what else they can really do with that small of an area, so it's better than nothing. One of the custodial CMs in the attraction also made a Minnie Mouse shape out of leaves and flowers.

Once we left Moana, we started to make our way to the front of the park. We wanted to watch some of the light show on Spaceship Earth. They are some of my favorite shows at Disney. We saw a couple, and my favorite being the standard Epcot one that play year-round.

After the shows, we made our way out to the buses. The line for the bus was getting pretty long, so we splurged for a Minnie Van. The Minnie Van ride was very nice, and we were tempted to use it a couple more times on the trip. However, we refrained and made it a one-time thing. Again... this is a reason why we like having our own car. We can go wherever we want to the go and not have to waste time waiting in line for buses.
