I think we are all just beyond tired of upcharges and every inch of the park being monetized. This one is slightly less offensive since it’s very optional and won’t matter much if you don’t do it, but it follows a pattern.
Amen brother, sister

Even if the customer LIKES something…10 years of beating the same horse starts to smell

There's a part of me that wonders... is there a heat map somewhere in the halls of TDO that shows monetary generation in the parks?

Red = zero revenue generation
Orange/yellow = underutilized for monetary generation
Green = Yeah, that's the spot...

"What's that giant red blob at MK?"

"Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, my liege"

'Well, we need to change that! What's that red blob there, in that Epcot park thing?"

"The Spaceship Earth post-show lounge?"

"We could sell alcohol there. Alcohol makes us a lots of profit."

Wait, do you think there's even the slightest chance that this doesn't exist?

I mean do you honestly think there is even a chance a business the size of WDW doesn't have a chart/graphic/some data presentation metric that identifies revenue generating areas/facilities and their revenue/cost/profit per square foot?

Do you think there is any successful business that doesn't have that information readily available and isn't analyzing it at least bi-annually?

You are absolutely right.
Disney's theme park business is about MAKING MONEY!
Its not about the guest experience, theme, quality or even BASIC MAINTENANCE, its about quarterly profits!!!!!!

If folks want guest experience, theme, quality they can go to EPIC

I only wish Disney's theme park business would talk to Disney's movie business. :)

It really does seem like it. If it’s not monetized, via an up charge, LL, food, merchandise, away it goes.

So much for the fun theming or epcot history nods on the menu - going for a more generic elegant touch with drinks like 'Manhattan in the Morning' and offerings like Lump Crab Gateau.

Admittedly, theming the menu was a bit more risky with the potential to be obvious or hokey - but I would have preferred that b/c I like my disney to be different vs whats typical outside. Maybe they are matching the theming to the sterile new world celebration spine.

Bar Helios at Universal just did this, and it works really well. The food is just named, but the drinks have a lean to the theme. And, it's still sophisticated. The names don't have to be blatant. I don't need a Figment Scale or Moana's Old Fashioned. It can be nods where someone who doesn't know won't realize. But, a theme to a lounge in a theme park seems to be very important. Let alone with the plethora of material they could have drawn from.

Self-referencing not only isn’t theming, it erodes theming.
I think it depends on the execution. I get it with CommuniCore Hall with it's geodesic exterior and decals for little thematic reason outside of a call back and it feels like they self reference b/c they are too lazy to create new ideas - but I think you can do it in a clever way.

And truthfully, even if executed horribly, the effort would probably more interesting than this utterly bland menu, including such ubiquitous airport lounge staples as 'Chef’s Selection of artisanal cheeses'.
