I honestly didn't know what that was in reference to as there was no "female pirate" in the announcement about the sign, but are we talking about the piece of concept art you can see in the link posted by Steve:

If so, are we really getting upset a piece of artwork shown in pretty cartoony concept art is not gritty enough? Or is there something else people are talking about?
This. The pirates in the ride aren’t realistic looking, they’re caricatures. What’s wrong with this new one looking just like the rest? Is it just “she’s new so she’s bad”?

Are people seriously still getting mad at female characters in 2025? Like, come on. What’s the problem with having a second female pirate?

Probably just upset she doesn’t look like this.

When they’re forced in to satisfy an artificial metric, yes. But Disney has never done that before right….?
You're assuming there's a metric to be filled simply because the character is a woman. How do you know that it's because of a metric and not simply the fact they Imagineers decided on having a female character? Were Madame Leota or the Beating Heart Bride in the Haunted Mansion "filling an artificial metric"? Were Teddi Barra or Trixie "forced diversity"? Mary Oceaneer? Bonnie Appetite? Dr. Helen Marsh? Gritty the Rabbit? No, they just made a character that's a woman because that's what they wanted to do. There's a ton of male characters, especially in Pirates, and you're upset that they added a single new female character. Take a step back and think- is a portrait of a female pirate hanging a wall really something to be upset about? Is it really ruining the bar?

For my part, I would prefer Jack Sparrow, but if that lady pirate is Redd from the ride, then cool. Historically, there really were lady pirates. So this wouldn't be pandering - just historically accurate.

Anyway, the concept art for this actually looks interesting. Not nearly as good as Epic Universe themeing, which is frankly amazing. But it's at least a reason for hope.

I believe this new pirate is a new character named Merry Goldwyn. Honestly, I'm glad she's not Redd, because I really don't like the US versions of Redd- her face looks weird, and her voice is too identifiable as Grey Griffin (voice actress for hundreds of characters in cartoons from the 90s-present), which takes me out of the experience because I just go "Oh, I know who's voice that is". Paris's Redd is fantastic though! Her face and costume match the art style of the other pirates well, and since it's French I had no clue who her VA was, so my immersion wasn't broken lmao.

On a side note- I'm just now realizing that Redd's US costume takes inspiration from the "Of Things to Come" painting in Dead Man's Grotto, where the Red Head is seen with a belt with pistols and a magenta hat- Redd has the exact same belt and pistols, and a similar magenta hat. Nice touch!
