I have to admit that I am not an Eminem fan, but I do respect him because he speaks hs mind and divulges what he feels. So I decided to see his movie, 8 Mile. I was hearing great reviews and there was oscar buzz on the film. God, were the critics wrong! That movie was horrible and his acting was worse. If the academy actually gives that movie any nominations I will lose respect for them!:hammer:

I don't know how they choose critics...it' always been a mystery to me. Santa Clause 2 got speared by several critics, but it led the box office opening weekend. Interesting to see how both these movies do over the long haul.

" 8 Mile" is definitely a hit in every since of the word, completely decimating the competition with an estimated $52 million opening weekend with an estimated $21,000 per theater on roughly over 2,400 screens. To give you an idea of how big this movie is a hit, Goldmember grossed a little over $20,000 on 3,600 screens ($73 million opening weekend).

I can't stand him, I hope never to see the movie. However being a Detroiter myself it can be difficult to ignore him. I wish he wasn't from Detoit. I must say, it is rare that I am ever proud of someone that comes out of Detroit and mostly embarassed. I think there is so many great people who just stay here, and never "make it big" elsewear.

Well, since no rapper can touch him lyrically, I for one can't wait to see this movie, even if he isn't the greatest at acting, its got Brittany Murphy and Kim Basinger to pick up the slack.

Ok, I’m going to keep my personal feelings about the star totally out of this subject and point out that opening weekend box office figures seldom reflect the quality of a movie. Lots of movies open big and then fizzle the next week due to poor word of mouth. Even that aside, there have been some industry estimates that most movies make about 50% of what they will make in their initial domestic release in the first weekend.

Do I think Monsters Inc. was a good movie? Yes. Do I think it being a good movie had a whole lot to do with the record breaking $60 million it opened with? No. I consider that mostly due to the all encompassing marketing campaign that Disney started a year before the release and steadily increased until opening day when McDonalds had the monsters in every happy mean and you couldn’t walk into a grocery store or Wal-Mart without seeing a standup display.

When you look at this movie, you have to consider the point of it as well. Is it most likely meant to be a hard edged real look at a poor white boy making it in a culturally controlled industry that it is very hard to cross over into or is it a star vehicle designed to cash in on the popularity of the main actor who has no real acting experience and is an easily marketable property right now?

Eminem has already said that the movie isn’t really accurate to the events in his life and one person who waited in line to see it that I talked to referred to it as a “teen fantasy”. Then again, I don’t think that the movie “Crossroads” was meant to be a cultural icon for the art houses either.

The one thing that I think is probably sad about this movie though is that from the trailers at least, it looks like they are trying to suggest that it is some serious hard edged movie about real life difficulties and such – you know, like it isn’t the typical pointless teen movie with a shallow rehashed mostly pointless plot and that is apparently exactly what it is but with a more urban feel… Anyone for “Purple Rain”? :hammer: :goodnevil

I am a reluctant fan of some of his music & the previews for the movie looked great, but I was SOOOOOOOO disappointed in it after seeing it. It is making huge amounts of $, but when i left the theater, I was not the only one voicing disappointment with the film. The amount of $ grossed proves nothing regarding a movie's worth. All it proves is how well it was promoted. The theater I saw it at had 4 screens dedicated to it & they were all packed for each showing, but people really seemed to be expecting more afterward. Personally, I don't think it flowed or had a point to it. I left there feeling dumber for having spent 2 hours watching it. There was no real plot, too many loose ends, no purpose & it was just plain boring. What a let down!

I know that's right! I just love the "I'm gonna kill you " references! Where does he come up with this stuff? It's just like WOW, I mean no one else could EVER become that emotionally charged!

Hey, we all make mistakes. I was there for the opening night of Monkeybone. Maybe you have hear of this little gem that was released nationwide and didn’t even make $5 during the entire time it was in theaters. My local paper had given it a positive (if not stellar) review, too. Every time it comes on cable I shutter at the bad memories.

Unfortunately, Eminem is going to be a HUGE draw, and kids will flock to his film. I was surprised that the critics liked the movie. (Lately I've started to notice that the more the critics pan a movie, the more I like it when I see it!)
