Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

My first Dopey coming up. I've been following the Galloway plan, and looking forward to it. I have even been training my body to wake up earlier and earlier, just to help make the early mornings a little bit easier for me for those 4 days in a row. My wife is doing her first ever half with me also, so I am definitely looking forward to that. I do plan on walking the 5k, and thinking of a .5 mile jog and .5 mile walk for the 10k, though knowing me, it'll be .5 mile jog, then .25 mile walk, as I will want to move more. Just doing what I can to conserve the legs for the mileage is clearly key.

What tips do any past Dopey finishers have?

Not done Dopey...not interested in running a Full, but I typically do the 3 races the other race weekends. My advice? Don't spend hours in the parks after the race. While Galloway's race recovery recommends walking after a race, that doesn't mean spending 6 hours in a park afterwards. If you're staying on property and your resort has a hot tub (a pool would also be fine), go sit in it for an hour after the race to help your leg muscles recover. Just make sure to move you legs...like you're riding a bike.

Isn't that what you do, @surfsupdon? I like the hot tub at Wilderness Lodge near the cabins because it's big.

Make sure to hydrate after a race. Along with appropriate refueling. Best thing? Drink a large glass of chocolate milk, which has the correct ratio of carbs & protein to help your muscles recover. Plus it tastes good. 😁

7 Dopey's under my belt with my 8th coming up.

I think the key day is half marathon day. Take that day easy, don't over do it afterwards in the parks either. I will go to the parks but limit what I do and will do things that require less walking or time on feet.

I will say also, after the marathon, don't just sit and do nothing all day. Keep the legs moving somewhat.

Correct, @LAKid53, I have always soaked in a hot tub and bicycle'd my legs for awhile after each Dopey race component. Huge help for the hip flexors, but I am a vey tight, non flexible person. I will be running the marathon this weekend (and I am over it and don't want to), but as @Rteetz has said, after the marathon I will eat and rest/nap, then go into the park and walk it out. You gotta do it for recovery.

Have a great race!

Last year was my first Dopey.

Few tips:

1.) Stick to your intervals
2.) Don’t try anything new on race day
3.) Never miss a water stop
4.) Walk the 5K
5.) Take the 10K and Half slower then normal

You can do this

My husband is running in the upcoming Marathon and we are a bit perplexed by his bib number this year. The last Disney marathon he ran a few years ago he was bib #XX. His proof of time for this race is faster than it was for that one and he ended up with a 100XX bib number this year. He was in the elite group for the Wine and Dine last year. Did they simply change the numbering this year?

Question for anyone who may know, what happens if you’re not able to travel to Orlando for the race because of a winter storm? I am not able to leave for Orlando until early Friday but there is an ice storm expected to hit before I am going to leave. Unfortunately, I can’t leave any earlier. I’m not expecting a refund, but is there a guaranteed entry for next year’s race or anything else? Thanks for any help.

I'd contact runDisney ASAP. You're not the only one in this situation. Surely they can provide some type of accommodation for those who cannot travel due to severe weather. What about SoCA residents who are running and facing 100 mph Santa Ana winds and uncontrollable wild fires?

Thanks for the response! Yeah I figured that there are a bunch of people flying to Orlando on Friday that are going to have their flights cancelled and no way to get there. I’m planning on driving, but the forecast where I live (Atlanta) is getting worse and I’m not going to take a chance . . . or leave my family behind in the storm.

Edit - and yes, everyone can make fun of me when Atlanta completely shuts down over a couple of inches of snow. I grew up in Michigan and lived with it from November to March so I know how ridiculous it is.

My house was devastated from Sandy back in Oct. 2012 and they did not issue a refund or grant me access to next year's event. I just lost out on all of the race money. I am still bitter when I think and dwell on it, especially as a 26yo young adult.
Hope that you get something!

Oh wow, I am really sorry to hear that. Did you exchange emails with them or talk to them over the phone?

I’m definitely not expecting anything if I’m not able to go, but was kind of hoping for maybe a guaranteed spot for next year’s race.

That's awful they refused to refund you.

runDisney needs to re-evaluate their "No Refund" policy in situations where runners have been adversely impacted by natural disasters like yours.
