#77?

I just got this email at work...I don't know if it only applies to Florida (I doubt it)...but its interesting, scary, but very informative...

A 19 yr. old saw an UNMARKED police car pull up behind her and put his lights on. Her parents always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a gas station or call #77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She called.

She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked
police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her.
The dispatcher checked to see if there where police cars where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground....the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the #77 Cell Phone Feature. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call #77 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't give you this little bit of
wonderful information. So now it's your turn to let your friends
know about #77.

Send this to every person you know, it may save their life!

P.S I just called #77 on my cell phone and the local dispatch officer answered. I told her I had just received this e-mail and wanted to verify the facts before I sent it on. She said, "Yes. That is correct. #77 is available for all motorists."

Its funny because like a week ago I head a story about this nineteen year old (not a police officer), pulling people over giving them lectures and warning them because of speeding on I-95.

Can anyone confirm if this #77 is available everywhere in the country, or is it some hoax? If so, what else can a person do if they are in that situation?

The story may be true, but the #77 isn't.

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.htm for the story.

http://www.shopoakpark.com/info-cellnumbers.html is a list of each state and what the Emergency Cell Phone Number is. Notice that only SIX states out of 50 use #77 (#SP is #77) and that Florida is NOT one of them.

Most of the states use 911, which I feel is the best thing you can do.

The wonders of emails and the Internet...someone along the chain must have gotten confused and so confused everyone else...funny thing is the person who sent this email to me, send it to everyone else in the building.....its like playing telephone....

So yea...now I'm confused...:veryconfu

Oh and look at THIS...

Well, so much for that! I have used 911 here in NY twice. Once to let the SP know one of their cruisers wrecked on and icy, snowy road (and almost took me out with it) and it worked well. They kept me on the phone until a unit arrived to check on me.
The second time was to report what looked like an unconscious person in a car. Again in the snow. There were no signs of braking and the car was in a field, with the persons head on the steering wheel (brake lights on). I got sent to three different police depts. They wanted me to stay with the car, but I was already 10 miles away in a snowstorm in rush hour traffic.

My conclusion...911 for cellphones isn't that great.

For a few months there was a rash of incidents in my county where drivers were pulled over by criminals who posed as police officers with flashing blues on their cars. Fortunately, a couple of these imposters were caught and there hasn't been another report of these false pull overs since.

Some AH did that here, the only problem was he pulled over the Chief of the police dept. he said he was on....doin time.
