Week 8 brings us to 1968
Movies turned down were:
The one and only, genuine, original family band.
Never a dull moment.
The horse in the gray flannel suit.
The love bug.
For weeks I wrote down The love bug. However as I entered week 8, I decided I wanted to shy away from the most popular movie this week and Blackbeard's Ghost looked interesting.
The film was well written, with a good mix of action and comedy. The special effects were really well done for it's time ( however there were times that the special effects provided some bloopers if you look close enough).
The movie followed Steve Walker, played by Dean Jones, as he takes over a track team at a local high school. Once he is in town, he discovers that the inn he is staying at is facing hardship, and may be taken over by some shady characters. Little do they know Blackbeards Ghost is going to help, like it or not.
The movie is stolen by Peter Ustinov as Blackbeard. He was coming off an Oscar for Topkapi, so this was a strange follow up but he ate it up.
The movie also stars Suzanne Pleshette as Joanne Baker, looking wonderful as ever.
Elisa Lancaster, as Emily Stowecroft, plays pretty much the same
character she played in The Bell, Book, And Candle. Sort of a kook.
This may be one of the shortest 52 in 52's. I have no fun facts.
So back to the movie itself. It is entertaining and fun. The wonderful acting pulls the movie along. It comes in at about an hour and forty-five minutes, but it flys by. It is a little undisney like with a lot of drinking, and guns, still I think the whole family can watch the film without doing any harm.
I would give it 4 of 5 Mickeys. It is a lost or overlooked Disney treasure. Give it a shot, you will not be disappointed.
Next week 1969.
