Week 7 brings us to 1967.
Movies I turned down, or just was not available:
Monkeys go home
The adventures of Bullwhip Griffin
Charlie the lonesome cougar
That left me with three choices:
The Happiest Millionaire- I turned this down because I just watched Fred MacMurray last week
The Gnome Mobile-this was the first movie I saw in a theatre! It was in Brookhaven PA. At an Eric theater. I remember it being dark and not being able to follow the plot. To me it was a bit scary. I remember most, the candy in the glass case. I was a kid ok! So it would be neat to go back. However I kept going back to another movie, which I have not seen in over 15 years.......The Jungle Book!
I am almost embarrassed picking this. When I started 52 in 52, I thought it would be a neat challenge, plus maybe find some treasures long forgotten. However as I get further into this I find myself comparing movies I remember watching as a child and comparing that with my reaction to the film as an adult. I hope I am doing ok mixing it up.
The Jungle Book. Well I am not going to give to much of a plot, if you do not know what the plot is, you been hiding under a rock for 5 decades. In short, boy Mowgli, raised in the jungle by the animals. We follow his fun and his dangerous adventures. My review mainly is how it holds up. First, I watched the anniversary addition and it looked wonderful. Hope this comes out on blu-ray soon. Colors popped. Sound was good. This movie is much lighter than the book and it comes across by the colors and the light. The music is addicting. You will be singing it to yourself all day after watching it. It is the perfect Disney movie. It is for everybody in the family, adventure, laughter, great music, suspense. It does, in my opinion, end kind of abruptly. However that may be me just looking for a problem. It is sad that Walt died during the making of this. It has him written all over it.
Fun facts:
There was another character named Rocky. He was a Rhino. Near sighted and short tempered. Voiced by Frank Fontaine. It was written out.
According to Elisie Kipling (Rudyard's daughter), Mowgli is pronounced "Mau-glee" not "Moh-glee". She never forgave Walt for that.
This was Verna Fetton's, Winfred the elephant, last role. She died one day before Walt. She was also an elephant in Dumbo.
Phil Harris, Baloo. Lived to 91. He was also the voice of Thomas O'malley in the Aristocats
Bruce Reitherman, Mowgli, is still alive. Works as a writer, producer, cinematographer. He also was Christopher Robin in Winnie The Pooh And The Honey Tree.
Sebastian Cabot, Bagheera, was also Sir Ector in Sword In The Stone. Also the narrator for Winnie The Pooh. However he is more known for being Mr French in Family Affair.
Sterling Holloway, Kaa, was also Pooh.
Well there are the fun and not so fun facts.
The Jungle Book is the perfect Disney animated movie it gets 5 out of 5 Mickeys.
Next week 1968.
