Week 6 is here, bring us to 1966

My options, I turned down, or just was not available through Netflix:

LT Robinson Crusoe USN
The Fighting Prince of Donegal
The Ugly Dachshund

I went with, Follow Me Boys, for week 6.

I had no info on this movie going in.
This movie was wonderful. It captures a time and place of days gone by.

The movie stars:
Fred Macmurray
Vera Miles (yes Psycho)
Lillian Gish (yes that silent film star)
Kurt Russell

Macmurray is in a traveling band. They stop in a small town, he likes it so much he decides to stay. It does not hurt that he is smitten with Vera Miles.
He takes a job in a small market, and volunteers to start a boy scout troop.
This is where he meets Kurt Russell. The story then takes off.
At first Macmurray bothered me. He seemed almost to old for the part. Playing a guy who kind of lacked social skills a bit. However as the movie moved on, it covered decades, so I understood why he was hired for the part.
The movie is wonderful. I am almost embarrassed that I never have seen it (or I do not remember seeing it). I think the movie is a wonderful family movie, however if you have not seen this movie since your childhood, go back and watch it as an adult. The movie may be even better watching it as an adult, it almost has a little Jefferson Smith in it from Mr Smith Goes To Washington. There is humor and tears in this film. It is a nice film that holds up well. It runs over 2 hours but it does not feel that way.

A couple of notes:
Macmurray was very good friends with Walt Disney. You can almost see why,he kind of has Walt's mannerisms.
This was the last live action movie Disney was on set for.
This was the first of many Kurt Russell/Disney films.
Vera Miles was in three Episodes of My Three Sons.
Luana Patten has a small role in this film, you may remember her from Song Of The South.
A blink and you may miss him, this is John Larroquette's debut as an army soldier
Macmurray was the first person to be named a Disney Legend in 1987.

This movie would have been higher on the Mickey Scale for me but there was one army scene that seemed to not fit. I do see how they wanted to add some action and suspence for kids, but the scene was odd.
Still 4 of 5 stars for Follow Me Boys.
Next week 1967.
