Week 4 is here. Getting right to it 1964.
Options turned down were:
A Tiger Walks
Misadventures of Merlin Jones
Three Live Of Thomasina (This was my second choice but I have a cat movie coming next week. There is a hint.)
Moon Spinners
Emil and The Detectives
As you all probably can figure out, I went with Mary Poppins.
These more popular movies, I have not gone into detail on the storyline because on this site most Disney fanatics do not need a story line.
I was not looking forward to Mary Poppins. I remember it as being long, with a boring second half.
I was wrong. Yes, it still needed a bit of editing, but as I have gotten older I think I appreciated the music more. The music pushes the movie along, which I probably did not appreciate as a child.
The movie has held up well showing a time and place.
Highlights to me were Step In Time. While watching, I thought it may be one of the best numbers in film of all time. I thought it was funny that the children created a run on the bank. When I was younger I do not know if I would have gotten that.
Of course Julie Andrews was great. However lost in the film, who does not get enough credit, is David Tomlinson (who also voices some animated creatures in the film).
I was wondering would anybody ever have the guts to remake it.
Hugh Jackman would be a lock for the Van role.
But who for Julie Andrews. Emmy Rosum can sing and act. Anne Hathaway can also. I would push toward Emily Blunt if she can sing.
Here are some tidbits:
Karen Dotrice, who played little Jane Banks, is married to Ned Nalle, president of programming for Playboy Entertainment. Very unDisney like. Her last filming was 2005.
Mattew Garber who played little Michael Banks, died at 21, after eating bad meat in India and catching hepatitis. So sad. He was only in three films all with Karen Dotrice.
Julie Andrews delayed signing for Mary Poppins, because she wanted the Doolittle part in My Fair Lady. After Hepburn got the part, she "settled" for Mary Poppins. The rest is history.
One of Walt's favorite songs of all time came from this movie "Feed The Birds".
Well in closing I give it 4 1/2 out of 5. May still need a little editing, but if you have not seen it for awhile. Go back and watch. It is Supercal..Oh I am not going to attempt to spell it.
